max shutter sync is 1/180, a shorter exposure than that and you'll get unevenly exposed frames (not to mention the camera will probably not fire the flash)

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I would advise your friend against covering the even since he doesn't know how to work a camera.

I don't think it's necessary to discourage him from shooting the event, as having some pictures would be better than no pictures.

That said, I believe Program mode would be the best bet. I'd definitely tell him how to switch from Auto Focus to MF, in case the camera starts to hunt. -0.5EV is good for the flash. Having a bit of practice beforehand would do wonders, too.
