K10D Firmware

I still have version 1.0 firmware on my K10D. Is it adviseable to upgrade to the latest version? Thanks.

Check the pentax site for upgrades, the latest supports the SDM lenses, the HCSD cards and othe fixes. Check the website and see if you use/need those features. Upgrading is very easy.

I would update to version 1.03 (latest). It should help improve the SR performance and clean up *some* of the noise for images taken with the 2-second self-timer.

You won't need to install version 1.01 (there wasn't a 1.02) because the latest update always includes the changes implemented in previous firmware versions.

I hope it helps.

I went from 1.0 to 1.30 without the need to go 1.10, 1.11, 1.20.

There is a v1.02 for the K10d. It turns on the Remote assistant. The only reason to go full on 1.03 is to support SDM in which case, I would actually wait until I Had some SDM lenses.

To reiterate another poster, the last firmware issued for the K10d was 1.30, not 1.03. The major tweak to 1.30 was the SDM support. An option if my DA* 50-135 AF dies a second time is to revert to 1.20 and use the screw drive to focus.

Typo... it happens.

One of the firware updates also allows putting ISO on one of the finger wheels, which i used all the time after that.

I believe you are thinking of 1.10, which put the OK button to use as an ISO button when you aren't using a menu. Press and hold, and the front e-dial magically changes the ISO. You can even see it in the finder. Great upgrade there.

I was thinking of one where, say you're using aperture priority, your rear dial can be the aperture and the update allows your front dial to be ISO. Was that a firmware update or am I getting confused?

IIRC, V1.10 turned on that feature along with a lot of others (HSS, etc). It's also the version that somebody first hacked into with the magic 5 button press before the Russian hack. V1.11 closed that door in the name of fixing the Rear curtain sync. Virtually rushed to get it out there so people could no longer hack into the Debug mode using the internet published method.

is the "option" to switch to SDM focus drive attractive?

It might be attractive, but it isn't available. I doubt that Pentax is likely to release a firmware update for a camera that has been out of production for more than two years.
