K10/K20 shutter sounds

Hi guys,

I've just picked up a second hand K20 and when I got home and started using it next to my K10 (which I'm planning to sell soon) I was amazed at a significant difference in shutter sound.

It actually got me a little worried as I assumed they would sound the same.

Could someone who ones both these cameras please try and describe the difference between their copies for me.

If only to put my mind at rest and that I haven't purchased a lemon of a K20.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Andrew

Well, I never owned the K10, but hope to ease your worries some. The so-called "robust" shutter of the K20 has long-been commented on by many. In fact, threads here have started serious debate on whether or not it is a good thing.

I actually like it, and have grown immune to it to be honest. But I'm sure if I switched bodies I would immediately need re-tuning. I'm sure shooters of the K10will offer you much more info.

Thanks mate.
Most appreciated. I shot with it more last night and like you I think I'll begin to like it.

If anyone has both the K10 and K20 please comment.

On a side note, I took some shots with my FA*200 and without making any adjustments the back focus issue I was having with the K10 seems to have disappeared!!

Surely someone here can help Lats out on this one?

I don't have both now, but did one year ago (really K10D clone; Samsung GX10). I now just have the K20D and for sure can say the K20D did not sound louder than the GX10 or way different. I think the shutter was just a bit more damped on the K20D but I am not sure. In any case there was no big difference.

What makes you think you may have a problem.

I used to have both the K10D and K20D. They have different shutters. The 20 shutter has much shorter shutter lag. Much more responsive. It also sounds slightly quieter and much "crisper".

If this makes you feel better, I have 3 LXes and each one has it's own distinct sound.

Hi lats,

I have both, just tried them both at 1/125 with no lenses and body caps. The K20 is slightly quieter and seems to vibrate a bit less. Both shutters sound similar though the K10 has a slight "squeeky" component to the sound. Why don't you try to describe the difference that you are hearing?

A friend has the K20D and I also noticed that the shutter sounds different. The K20D seems to be less loud and sounds somehow thinner. My K10D is significantly noisier.

Just to throw another data point out there, but my K100DS is much louder than the K10D that a friend has.

I have had a k20d and k10d side by side and the k10d was surely louder; the k20d definitely more dampened.
