Pulling the trigger on a K-7 tomorrow... Advice please?

So... after leaving my K-x and FA 31 in the back of a cab nearly two months ago, I've had enough of being without a DSLR.

We are off to Phuket in a few days and want to have something with more control than our Canon SX1 IS or Sanyo HD1000 (though am impressed with the latter's F1.8 lens).

Long story short, wife says "I miss the sharp faces/ /blurry background shots with your lost camera". To me, that's longhand for "get another one".

So, I'd prefer a Pentax, but a K-7 replacement is going to be announced in May. I know it.

The other option is a Canon 550. Faster focus (?), more MP to crop into, but a whole new set of lenses to buy into, with no IS for primes.

As I said, buying a K-7 tomorrow. Please let me know if I should wait, or if I could do better.

If your luck is anything like mine you'll buy the K-7, you'll fall in love with it, and about 2 months later, Pentax will announce the next generation camera.

So, YES!!! Buy the K-7 right now. I wanna see what's coming next

BTW, I have a K-7 and you'll love it.

At current prices, the K-7 is a great value, even if you decide to sell it and get a K-8 next year. IMO, the K-7 is the most/best camera for the money that you can get right now. You can use whatever K-mount lenses you already own and never have to worry about buying stabilized lenses.

K-7 replacement in May? Is that official? If so, I would definitely wait. Then again, I tend to buy expensive lenses but cheaper bodies these days.

Get the K-7. It's an excellent camera and the difference between the K-7 and K-8? will not be great enough to make you need to buy one. Usually, there is a big difference in every decond generations. You can get the K-9 later. That would be funny if they actually name a camera the K-9 . It could be used for Police work!

I'm more or less in the same situation. I have a K100D Super and want to upgrade. The K-7 sounds very tempting, but a K-8 might be released in a month or two.

For me though, I don't think I'd buy a K-8. The thing is, the price of the K-7 has come down to what I find acceptable. When the K-8 is released, it will no doubt be much more expensive. On the other hand, prices on the K-7 should start dropping even more by then. So that's the choice I think I will be faced with.

Even if it gets released next month, are you willing to pay full MSRP for it? In most cases of Pentax users, the answer is no

That's the point I was trying to make. A K-8 will probably cost more than I'm willing to pay. I can either buy a K-7 now, or wait a few months and maybe get it cheaper.

If you just want weather sealing, I'll probably go for a used K10D. There are some great deals on those (I see them for about $150-$200 price varies depending on your locale).

I know how hard is life without a DSLR after having one. As starbase218 says, if you wait for the new Pentax camera to buy, you may wait few months and/or pay the MSRP price. You can get a used K10D for about $300+ and wait till prices come down on the K-7 after the K-8 is released. You can then have a K-7 and a K10D as a backup just in case. My 2 cents.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

My original K-x came with the 18-50 and 50-300, and I got it from the US. In HK it would have been over US$1K. In the US it was something like $650 (I may be wrong, but it's in the ballpark).

Annoying that Pentax is so expensive here. The local agent here is a company called Jebsen, who are also the Porsche importer... I guess price sensitivity isn't a high priority.

Hong Kong has a reputation for being a cheap place to buy products, and some companies play to that. For example, a Canon 550D w/ kit lens is about US$730 here, compared to $899 in the US. My Canon SX1 IS was US$340 here over a year ago when it was considerably more elsewhere.

Anyway, weather here was too rotten to go out and get the K-7 today, so will do so tomorrow.

Much as I wanted the K-7, time wasn't on my side. Leaving tomorrow for holiday and needed something pronto...

K-7 retail pricing is still over US$1,200 (with WR kit lens) here... only some independent e-tailers have it at sub US$1K, and they have been closed since Thursday pm for Easter. I didn't want to give away $200 so I found one shop selling the K-x for US$500 (everyone else here is US$620 up still...) and got a WHITE one.

This way it'll be harder to leave in the back of a cab :-)

Will be a nice stop-gap until whatever tempting thing Pentax offers next.

Thanks for all the advice.
