So you think the cameras will use M instead then? Or were you just joking?

That would be interesting, but I don't think Pentax would become too popular with Leica.
not M as in leica, M as in the M series of pentax bodies. ie: MX, ME, MV, etc. leica doesnt own the letter M. besides, nobody is going to mistake an SLR for a rangefinder regardless of the name.

First there was the *ist digital series, closely resembling that of the *ist film series that was in production at the time. The names went as follows:

*ist D
*ist DS
*ist DL
*ist DS2
*ist DL2

I'm not very familiar with the film cameras that were made then, but I'd assume that they were possibly given the names S and L? Or maybe not.

Then came the K series. The K100D and the K110D were first, I'm not sure where their names were derived from (k1000 maybe, but probably not due to a later camera), and then the K10D and the K200D and K20D came.

It would seem that Pentax was not happy with that numbering convention (although they had a lot more numbers at their disposal than Canon and Nikon) and they came up with the next camera.

The K-m (K2000) was obviously a remake of the KM film camera and the K2000 reference was one to the original K1000. Of course, the K-x (the most recent camera) and the KX film camera also share the same similarities as well.

Then Pentax also threw another one out there, the K-7. Was there a film camera that had a name as such or did Pentax just come up with this all on it's own? If this naming convention is consistent in any way, it's that Pentax likes to be unpredictable, so what can we expect in future names? I don't know if the KM and the KX had any other film brothers that we could expect in digital, and maybe Pentax will make the K-5 and then head in an entirely different direction (any guesses to where?) but it should be interesting to find out what they have in store for us.

Anyone have any idea what the next series might start with? Are they going to go back to the K300D and the K30D? Has the D even become needed anymore?
If we look back into the long history of pentax and cameras, we might have some parallels.

There was a whole series of Ahasiflex, then spotmatics, then K, M, L, and P series cameras, followed by SF, PZ, Mz, then *ist

Since we are now in the K series, lets hope and prey we can skip the M series (The cameras are already small enough) and how about an L series. (or maybe not, great camera but not necessairly commercially a success)

you forgot the pre-spotmatic 'S' series. and the odd 'H' models.

So in other words, Canon and Nikon have pretty much ran out of numbers (now their entry levels use the thousand range), but Pentax probably never will?

I am hoping for a replacement for the K20D so maybe it will be the K30D. I know it's simple but it's a shot in the dark.

Well you're mistaken there because Leica did complain when Olympus created their first SLR and called it the M-1 in 1972. Since Leica's flagship rangefinder cameras are known as the M Series, Leica complained about the name of the M-1 forcing Olympus to rename it as the OM-1 (adding the initial of designer Y. Maitani) to further clarify between the brands. Bodies and lenses with the original M name are rare (5000 bodies were made according to Olympus) and sought after by collectors.

fair enough, but pentax never used the M with any number, and I would assume, like the k-m and k-x, if they revived the M line, they would again, not use a number. that would mean that now, like then, leica would have nothing to say. which goes back to what I said. leica does not own the letter M, they just have a brand recognition with M#.

I don't think the SF series will translate to digital, it just doesn't feel right to me, I don't know about anyone else though.

The Lx is what I'm guessing will come next. I'm really assuming that this will probably be the K-x's successor (although wasn't the Lx a luxury camera? What about the Km and the Kx though)?
