Where will Pentax's DSLR naming convention go next?

First there was the *ist digital series, closely resembling that of the *ist film series that was in production at the time. The names went as follows:

*ist D
*ist DS
*ist DL
*ist DS2
*ist DL2

I'm not very familiar with the film cameras that were made then, but I'd assume that they were possibly given the names S and L? Or maybe not.

Then came the K series. The K100D and the K110D were first, I'm not sure where their names were derived from (k1000 maybe, but probably not due to a later camera), and then the K10D and the K200D and K20D came.

It would seem that Pentax was not happy with that numbering convention (although they had a lot more numbers at their disposal than Canon and Nikon) and they came up with the next camera.

The K-m (K2000) was obviously a remake of the KM film camera and the K2000 reference was one to the original K1000. Of course, the K-x (the most recent camera) and the KX film camera also share the same similarities as well.

Then Pentax also threw another one out there, the K-7. Was there a film camera that had a name as such or did Pentax just come up with this all on it's own? If this naming convention is consistent in any way, it's that Pentax likes to be unpredictable, so what can we expect in future names? I don't know if the KM and the KX had any other film brothers that we could expect in digital, and maybe Pentax will make the K-5 and then head in an entirely different direction (any guesses to where?) but it should be interesting to find out what they have in store for us.

Anyone have any idea what the next series might start with? Are they going to go back to the K300D and the K30D? Has the D even become needed anymore?

I expect the next slick little pentax camera to be the K-Y.

Come on...It was a hanging fastball, I had to hit it!!

I did that a few threads ago, I really think if they released the K-9 and the K-Y that Pentax would become the most popular camera brand to ever exist. Ever.

They could make two new cameras:

The ultra popular model: KY
The ultra unpopular model: KZ

Or the K2 as there was a film version of the camera.

Do you think that instead of the K-5, Pentax will instead release a K-2 DSLR?

Shouldn't this be over in Speculations & Rumours?

I'm not sure that homages to 20- and 30-year old film cameras unknown outside a shrinking aging community is a great strategy for product naming. I've already criticized the whole *crap series for being unpronounceable and Net-hostile.

R2D2 and 3CPO make as much sense as anything, but Lucas probably won't grant a license. And where would further model names go? INXS? L33T? OMFG? ROFL?

Keep-ing with K-names, there's K00L, K-Dawg, K1LLR, KL33N, K0K-Up, K00k-OFF, K0FF, K1F, K-Loud9, K-Rap, etc. Somehow I don't these will make it out the door. Another K-strategy would involve numbers like K101, K95, K87 etc that look like names of USA rock-radio stations. Hmmm, no, that's not likely either.

But any cam on a K-mount is likely to have a K-name. If an EVIL cam with a new mount emerges, how about calling it the Z-mount? Then we can go from Z1 to Z40x to Z99 etc. These have a nice ring to them. Or are they already in use? I dunno.

(Looks like someone took the DS, left it in the sun for too long then stepped on it)

A contest to see who could make the most posts in a given time was obviously not a good idea; the posters have gone crazy!

im assuming at some point that they might revive the 'M' series, as their bodies seem to get smaller and more feature rich, the way the original M series did over the K series film bodies.

So you think the cameras will use M instead then? Or were you just joking?

That would be interesting, but I don't think Pentax would become too popular with Leica.

I'm presuming the K series comes from the 1958 "K" which a few of us here have. Perhaps they could release FF using the L series....or release another S.
