But do I get all the camera's program modes if I set the aperture ring to 'A'? And do I get aperture-preferred semi-automatic, setting it to any other f-stop?

In theory and/or in practice, of these two lenses 18-55mm and 70-200mm, which would be the most in need of auto-focus?

With the aperture ring set to "A", all autoexposure modes are available - Av, P, Tv, etc. As well as M, of course, if you like. With the aperture ring *not* set to "A", only "M" works properly, as described in the sticky thread on using manual lenses at the top of beginner's forum.

Not sure exactly what you mena in asking which lens would be in more "need" of autofocus, I but I assume you're asking, which lens would be more vaulable to have in AF form. i'd say the 18-55 would probably be used at least twice as often as the 70-200 - perhaps much more than that. And if you use the 18-55 more, you'd probably appreciate AF more. Also, a telephoto lens magnifies things making MF easier. And it's also more likely to be used in situations like, say, a bird in a tree, where you could never trust AF to choose the bird rather than one of the branches. Add to this the fact that the 18-55 costs next to nothing, but a good telephoto lens might set you back more, and I think it pretty clear.
