Yongnuo YN585EX flash unit user manual
Posted By: Zelig, 12-13-2019, 04:40 AM

Hi,

I’ve made a user manual for the Yongnuo YN585EX flash unit and would like to share it with other users.

I used this project to get familiar with Scribus and Inscape, two open source software's.

Initially my idea was a much simpler manual but I kept adding information and the manual kept growing.

In the end, after being unfinished for several months, I really had to make an effort to finish it. And now that it’s done, why not share it?

Although I’ve tried to be accurate and doubled checked all the information I’ve added to the manual there might be mistakes - take this into consideration when making use of it.

Also, I’ve designed it so it could be easily read one page at the time on a small tablet. This means that if you print it on a letter or A4 paper size you will end with gigantic letters. At 100% you should be able to print four pages on a single page.

Professionally, I find the Yongnuo a useful tool. I bought it as a backup unit to my Metz 58AF-2. Although the Metz is a more complete flash unit I find myself using the Yongnuo a lot simply because I don’t have to‘plunge’ into the menus to adjust the light output as in the Metz.

So, here it is, hope that this manual will be useful to some of you.

Zelig

The manual is much more informative and transparent than the one that came with a flash unit. Thanks for a great job and for sharing it!

Thanks for all your work in producing this manual.
A question...I didn't find any reference to HSS. Did I miss it or doesn't this flash support HSS?

Cheers,
Terry

The Yongnuo doesn’t support HSS.

I also came across that information somewhere on the internet but on the original manual there’s no reference to it and on this (probably) official link neither:

Yongnuo Photographic Equiment Co., Ltd

This flash unit shares a lot of features with other Yongnuo flash units so when writing the user manual they probably copy and paste a lot of information, including images. That was probably a copy and paste mistake.

They also claim on the original manual that the auto zoom range goes from 20 to 80mm. I’ve tested this with 4 different zoom lenses and was unable to go pass 58mm. As I mention in my manual they also claim that it supports FEB and it doesn’t.

The Yongnuo is well build, in my opinion, the plastic and the construction feels nice. I’ve bought mine more than two years ago and had no problems with it. The original manual, also in my opinion, gives the opposite feeling.

Glad that you liked the manual.

Zelig
