K-7 Viewfinder explained

days ago in fact:

It is done with the mirror locked up and readings are from the sensor. No need for transparent mirror. And the transparent LCD is deposited on the Condenser glass just next to the focusing screen. To avoid mirror reflection a plane screen is rolled out between the mirror and the focusing screen when the former is locked-up

= digital preview in VIEWFINDER

I just realized RuiC described exactly what we just saw in ogl's diagram days ago.

there is a transparent LCD at the last face of the pentaprism that lets the reflex mirror do its traditional job of letting light through it when the mirror is down.

the LCD either directly displays information or reflects it from a projector above (the red thing in ogl's diagram) when the mirror is UP (to avoid nikon patent?). this is also why it would be showing active real-time readings from the sensor.

as RuiC described, there is a blackout plane rolled out between the prism and the mirror when it is in the up position to prevent reflecting any other light including the LCD information itself.

how do you activate this LCD without an "EVF" button? easy, the digital preview position on the trigger.

sorry, thought this deserved it's own thread. didn't really make sense until now.

I still could not make sense of the diagram.

Wouldn't it be just the normal Viewfinder LCD info display panel?
And the big red thing above the eye piece is the new 77 segment metering sensor?

thanks nosnoop. i bet this isn't just for preview in the viewfinder, but also how Contrast AF is done.

the red thing in the diagram probably isn't a projector at all (the LCD looks to have enough hardware to work independently), but the AF sensor for LV.

I have posted in much detail, in my blog, about the possible EVF in the K-7. When I posted my first comment, it was purely speculative from my side, just connecting the dots. The drawing that has leaked recently seems to confirm that my speculations were correct.

Further info:

Besides I started this thread which might interest you:

AF sensor for LV.
Actually no, all contrast AF is done through the main CMOS/CCD sensor (Sony's 2xx/3xx pseudo LV being the only exception).

yes, it totally could be if you just had the diagram, but listen to what RuiC said over the weekend. he sounded like he knew what he was talking about. needed both pieces of the puzzle.

then it probably is the 77 segment phase detect sensor. that still doesn't explain away what RuiC went into such great detail about tho.

yeah, thats the thread i got most of this information from, and where i posted originally. i just thought with ogl's last diagram, we could now possibly remove the "?" from the thread title.

^ OK, good suggestion: I will remove the question from the title.

BTW if some moderator is reading, it might be a good time to merge this with my previous thread discussing the EVF, to avoid scattering info.

i wasn't sure but aren't most phase-detect AF sensors on the bottom of the camera, using transparent mirrors?

examples:
http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/camera_images_3/Canon/misc/af-lv.png
Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 Review: 2. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

RuiC did mention there would be no need for transparent mirrors which could also mean a brighter finder.

he did specifically mention a transparent LCD however, which a traditional camera info viewfinder LCD wouldn't have to be....*

*unless you're Nikon

They did not take it down, but it is and was always protected from remote linking by a HTTP Referer check. This means that if you copy and paste the link into a new window it will work, but if you click it from another site (i.e. Pentaxforums) or try to link the image directly, it will fail with a 403 Forbidden. If they took it down it would say 404 Not Found.
