It looks like the in-camera HDR is only 3 frames but the camera will bracket 5 frames.

I'll take the 5 frames and PP the HDR!
I believe that it isn't three frames for HDR but three exposures(at least) in the same frame.

Additionally, I would be surprised if the in-camera hdr would work w/o tripod. But maybe, with 3 images now taken in as little as 0.4s, it does

if the k-7 would be able to align in-camera, and output an exr (hdr) file, instead of a tonemapped jpeg, now that would make some noise..

Same as in Pentax *ist DS and other entry level bodies from Pentax.
Fair enough, never had an entry level Pentax so didn't realise this. Groovy.

Sample images

pentax.de had sample images of the K-7. They have been shot by Peter Baus (Pentax Hamburg) and were in the area open for registered users of pentax.de.

2 DNG files (ISO 200, f/6.7 one for each new WR kit lens) + 2 JPG (same subjects as DNG).

Meanwhile, they have been taken offline so I won't post'em here.

My impression:

The DNGs opened in ACR and looked no different from those of a K20D. Great resolution for the 18-55, though.

The JPGs looked like heavily processed in LR (they were said to be taken off a K-7, unprocessed -- so, it was in camera processing at work). Brighter, colors more vibrant and shadows extremely pushed (dark wood suddenly revealed texture).

Due to the extreme push in shadow areas, some noise in dark areas became visible. As one would expect from experience in LR.

On digitalfotonetz.de, this noise at ISO 200 was criticised (because it wasn't noticed where it was coming from) and obviously, Pentax took the samples off site.

Personally, I found the post processing was too heavy for the given subject (sunlight) from an artistic point of view, but showcased the new "enhance shadow" capabilities in the K-7 for JPG shooters pretty well.

falconeye: about the raws, to be honest, it's hard to fault the k20d at iso 100 and 200, perhaps we will really see the (any) difference at higher iso and/or higher contrast scenes (where snr in the shadows starts to make trouble even at low iso). let's wait for a production model, tested by a photographer. i hardly care about the jpeg, so i won't comment (your explanation sounds very reasonable though).

thanks for the info and your thoughts!

Funny, that guy in the 'what camera' video sounds quite bitter and spouts a load of the usual anti-Pentax bull before grudgingly admitting the K-7 is hard to fault!
Whoever said that magazines were biased...

so 2x the price of the normal non WR 18-55 just cause of weather seals? Don't know what the 550-200 goes for but it sounds more reasonable...

i agree the 18-55 sounds a little bit pricey, and i just realized: i know i sound spoiled (and so soon, too ), but i would like to see the 16-45/4 with weatherseals. in any case, we really need a sealed ultrawide (we, landscape photographers). i hope sealing is about to become standard with pentax starting with the k-7

now that pentax has released the K7 and we have gotten a chance to view what its coming with, do you think it will be on par, above or below Nikon D90

I'm reading the preview @ imaging-resources and I'm drooling and really hoping the first reviews will be as good as that preview.
