Adobe lens profiles for Camera Raw, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3
Posted By: knoxploration, 08-30-2010, 11:31 PM

Photographers using current versions of Adobe software including Camera Raw 6.1 or later, Photoshop CS5, and Photoshop Lightroom 3 all have a useful tool at their disposal, which can correct for geometric distortion (both barrel and pincushion), chromatic aberration, and lens vignetting -- all with a minimum of fuss. The feature relies on lens profiles, which can be created by the user community. (Adobe themselves also provide a modest number of lens profiles.)

The process of creating a lens profile has been designed to be relatively straightforward, and is achieved using a free Lens Profile Creator tool available from Adobe Labs. (Full instructions are available from Adobe in their Lens Profile Creator Calibration Chart Shooting Quick Start Guide, as well as the full Calibration Chart Shooting Guide, and are beyond the scope of this article.)

While the highest-quality corrections are likely to be achieved with a profile created using your specific camera model (and indeed, your specific lens units so as to cancel out sample variations), very acceptable results can be achieved with profiles created by your fellow photographers -- even if the precise camera model differs. Profiles are specific to either Raw or developed (JPEG, etc.) files, since developed files may already have lens corrections applied to them by the camera or other processing software.

And so, the purpose of this article: to help Pentax photographers share their lens profiles, and to summarize the available profiles. Following at the end of this post is a list of known profiles for first-party and third-party lenses on Pentax camera bodies.

If you have created a profile you'd like to share, or know of somebody who has shared a profile that isn't on our list, please either contact me privately to let me know, or simply reply to this article. I'll do my best to keep the first post in the thread updated with links to the latest profiles. (If you could let me know if I have your permission to add the profile directly as an attachment to this post, that'd be helpful. So would any information on how the profile was created -- body, focal lengths, apertures used, focus distances, and whether the profile is for Raw or developed images. If you know of profiles on other sites, please don't upload somebody else's profile here without their permission -- either provide a link to the site, ask them to join and share the profile here themselves, or both.)

Even if a profile already exists, don't feel shy about submitting your own alternative profile. There's a lot of leeway in profile creation, such as for example the number of focal lengths, apertures, etc. that are included in each specific profile. Adobe's software is designed to interpolate (read: guess) how lens characteristics vary between these user-defined sample points, and so profile creation is a balance between the accuracy of the profile, and the work involved in its creation. Lens sample variation also plays a part, and so do personal user tastes. It's possible that many users may find your alternate profile more to their tastes than an already existing one... :-)

(Note: For now, I've not had a moment to ask for permission from anybody to share their profiles as attachments directly in this article, so for the time being this list consists solely of links to other posts where profiles have been shared.)

Without any further ado, following are the profiles themselves:

Hi,

I am new to Pentax with my K-5 and these two lenses:
smc-DA 18-55/3.5-5.6 AL WR
smc-DA 18-135/3.5-5.6 AL (IF) DC WR

I would like to get profiles in Photoshop CS5 and ACR for these lenses, but cannot find them in the lists here, and I doubt that I could make a good lens profile myself.

Instead I have tried to lobby a little with Adobe and Pentax to try to get them to make the lens profiles. If many people do the same as I did, then maybe these companies would do as we wish and make more lens profiles. Here are the contact ways that I used:
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
http://www.pentax.com/subsidiary.html#europe

I think you need to register first at Adobe and Pentax to use these contact possibilities.

Hello SayK!
Thanks a lot for making the profile for the 18-135 lens!
It is really longed for.
But I had problems trying to unzip the file and got an error message that it was invalid.

Thanks Sten ! I just tried downloading the profile and unzipping, it works on my computer (Windows 7 using 7-Zip if it helps). Try downloading it again !
I did send the profile to Adobe today so it should appear in the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader once they review it, you could try using that method instead...good luck !

Hi again, SayK,
Thanks for mentioning 7-zip. I downloaded that program, and then I could unzip your lens profile. I also downloaded the Adobe Lens Profile Creator program, but it could not open your lens profile. Maybe the file type (lccp?) was missing? I also read the Adobe documentation, but I failed there too, because in my Windows Vista computer there were none of the possible folders where the lens profile should be installed:
C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0
I just did not have any of those folders.
Beginner's problems, i guess.

Thanks for the DA 18-135 profile!

What's odd is that Lightroom "finds" the profile just fine, but in its metadata fields, it cannot find that lens in the metadata! So I can't search for shots using that lens because for some reason Lightroom can't find that lens in the metadata tags.

But the profile is most welcome and hopefully the next version of Lightroom can find the DA 18-135 in the PEF metadata.

Apertures : f/3.5*, f/4*, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f/32*, f/40* (*depending on focal lengths)
Focus distances : varied
Added to the list in the first post. Thanks so much for the effort, and for taking the time to use my format (which saves me a lot of effort in updating the list)!

No problem, glad I could contribute !
Sten I think both "AppData" and "ProgramData" are hidden folders by default in Windows Vista, try going into Control Panel -> Folder options -> Display tab and make sure that "Display hidden files, folder and drives" is selected (might not be the exact wording).

SayK,
Thank you for your help!
Yes, the folders were hidden, and I changed that so they were visible, and I found the lens profiles in a subfolder of ProgramData. Then I copied your lens profile to that subfolder. Unfortunately your lens profile was not visible when I then tried lens correction in ACR. Perhaps this was due to that is has "file" as file type, not "LCP"?

One more step taken.
I managed to give the new 18-135 lens profile file the file extension LCP like the other lens profiles. I copied it to the subfolder of ProgramData where the other lens profiles reside.
But when I run ACR and try to do lens correction, then the new lens profile is still not visible.

Are you trying to use it for RAW images or JPGs? It will only be visible for RAW images.

Thank you for asking, Class A! I try to use it for RAW images, but the added lens profile is not visible, while the other lens profiles are.

The Adobe Lens Profile Downloader worked fine, and now I have my lens profile for the Pentax 18-135 lens, and it works!

The thing I did wrong before was to install the lens profile manually in this folder:
C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0
That folder is obviously just for the standard lens profiles, and the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader puts the user lens profile for the Pentax 18-135 lens somewhere else. But the main thing is that it works. Great!
