Adobe lens profiles for Camera Raw, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3
Posted By: knoxploration, 08-30-2010, 11:31 PM

Photographers using current versions of Adobe software including Camera Raw 6.1 or later, Photoshop CS5, and Photoshop Lightroom 3 all have a useful tool at their disposal, which can correct for geometric distortion (both barrel and pincushion), chromatic aberration, and lens vignetting -- all with a minimum of fuss. The feature relies on lens profiles, which can be created by the user community. (Adobe themselves also provide a modest number of lens profiles.)

The process of creating a lens profile has been designed to be relatively straightforward, and is achieved using a free Lens Profile Creator tool available from Adobe Labs. (Full instructions are available from Adobe in their Lens Profile Creator Calibration Chart Shooting Quick Start Guide, as well as the full Calibration Chart Shooting Guide, and are beyond the scope of this article.)

While the highest-quality corrections are likely to be achieved with a profile created using your specific camera model (and indeed, your specific lens units so as to cancel out sample variations), very acceptable results can be achieved with profiles created by your fellow photographers -- even if the precise camera model differs. Profiles are specific to either Raw or developed (JPEG, etc.) files, since developed files may already have lens corrections applied to them by the camera or other processing software.

And so, the purpose of this article: to help Pentax photographers share their lens profiles, and to summarize the available profiles. Following at the end of this post is a list of known profiles for first-party and third-party lenses on Pentax camera bodies.

If you have created a profile you'd like to share, or know of somebody who has shared a profile that isn't on our list, please either contact me privately to let me know, or simply reply to this article. I'll do my best to keep the first post in the thread updated with links to the latest profiles. (If you could let me know if I have your permission to add the profile directly as an attachment to this post, that'd be helpful. So would any information on how the profile was created -- body, focal lengths, apertures used, focus distances, and whether the profile is for Raw or developed images. If you know of profiles on other sites, please don't upload somebody else's profile here without their permission -- either provide a link to the site, ask them to join and share the profile here themselves, or both.)

Even if a profile already exists, don't feel shy about submitting your own alternative profile. There's a lot of leeway in profile creation, such as for example the number of focal lengths, apertures, etc. that are included in each specific profile. Adobe's software is designed to interpolate (read: guess) how lens characteristics vary between these user-defined sample points, and so profile creation is a balance between the accuracy of the profile, and the work involved in its creation. Lens sample variation also plays a part, and so do personal user tastes. It's possible that many users may find your alternate profile more to their tastes than an already existing one... :-)

(Note: For now, I've not had a moment to ask for permission from anybody to share their profiles as attachments directly in this article, so for the time being this list consists solely of links to other posts where profiles have been shared.)

GREAT work, Christine -- thanks so much! I've added all of these to the list in the first post.

If you have a moment, could you please confirm for me that the Tamron is this specific model:

http://www.tamron-usa.com/assets/pdfs/A06.pdf

There are a lot of similarly-named lenses in their product line, but I *think* that's probably the one you have.

The box says "Model: A061P" so I think that's close enough.

Great forum! Some questions:

1) I suppose the smc PENTAX DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL is not the WR version? (have to keep your eyes open since many lenses have very similar names!). Could someone please confirm!

2) You often mention with which camera the profile has been made and the version of Lightroom Does this matter? Or do I just have to make sure it is the the right lens?

Regards, Hoogey

Thanks, Christine! I've corrected the name in the first post, as the A061P is actually a different model to the A06P. It adds a 'Di' designation, which implies that it uses different coatings to the previous non-Di model. (Di, in Tamron-speke, means "Digitally Integrated Design", ie. intended for use with DSLRs.)

If you're interested, the brochure and manual for your model are here:

We have a profile for the AL WR version, but you can also use it with the non-WR version. They're optically identical -- the only difference is whether or not the lens includes weather sealing.

According to Adobe, profiles don't have to be made with the same camera body that you own to be useful -- for example, you could use a profile made on the K-7 with a K10D. That said, if all other things are equal, the best results are likely to be obtained when using a profile made with the same camera body. In the real world, the differences between the degree of obsessiveness demonstrated by the people creating the profiles will play a bigger role than which body was used, though. ;-)

As regards the Lightroom versions, I only mention those for Adobe-supplied profiles, and it's only stated so you know which version Adobe released the profile with. That way you know, for example, that if you're using Lightroom 3.0 and have a Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 272EP lens, you'll want to upgrade to Lightroom 3.2 to get the profile for that lens. (For now, it's likely you'll upgrade anyway for the bug fixes etc., since the updates are available free of charge. At some point in the future, this information will become more relevant though, when a major LR update has been released, and you have to pay to upgrade to it.) ;-)

Thanks

thanks for a qreat answer. I did however write my questions to quick, and I actually ment the lens smc PENTAX-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED (Raw, Pentax K20D), obviously impossible for you to know ;-) This is not the wheather resistant version (WR). Is it also optical identical with the smc PENTAX-DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED WR ?

Yes, I believe both versions of that lens are optically identical.

FA 43 Profile

The profile above for the FA 43 is not complete. I tried to use it but received error messages. I posted the error messages in the Adobe forum and they said the problem was caused,
"The error message occurs because you don't have the images that were used to create the project file. I suggest that you go back to the forum from where you obtained the LCPP file and ask where the actual profile can be found."
I tried to find the author and send him a PM but was not successful. Perhaps it is a case of using a different forum name than the name that shows up when the profile is entered. Either way, it needs to have the profile generated so that it results in a LCP file as per the other question I posted with Adobe,
"Yes, LCPP is the extension used for lens profile project file (i.e. the data for each image used to make the profile), not a lens profile.

Hi Glen

Thanks for letting us know! The author is Christine Tham, who added the profile in this post:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-processing-articles/112707-adobe-len...ml#post1207277

If you could contact her, and let her know, that'd be great. Unfortunately I don't have the time and lenses to test every profile myself, so I'm reliant on others' help such as your own in catching these errors.

I do have on my list to go through when I've time and add the authors' names (and links to their member pages and/or the posts where they made the profiles available). That should at least make it easier to get in touch...

Thanks. Got the email.

Looks like I posted the "project" files rather than the generated profiles.

Here are the correct files (starting with DA lenses)

Thanks, Christine. I've updated all your earlier links to use the new attachments. I've also added the FA J 18-35 to the list, as you'd not uploaded that one previously.
