Adobe lens profiles for Camera Raw, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3
Posted By: knoxploration, 08-30-2010, 11:31 PM

Photographers using current versions of Adobe software including Camera Raw 6.1 or later, Photoshop CS5, and Photoshop Lightroom 3 all have a useful tool at their disposal, which can correct for geometric distortion (both barrel and pincushion), chromatic aberration, and lens vignetting -- all with a minimum of fuss. The feature relies on lens profiles, which can be created by the user community. (Adobe themselves also provide a modest number of lens profiles.)

The process of creating a lens profile has been designed to be relatively straightforward, and is achieved using a free Lens Profile Creator tool available from Adobe Labs. (Full instructions are available from Adobe in their Lens Profile Creator Calibration Chart Shooting Quick Start Guide, as well as the full Calibration Chart Shooting Guide, and are beyond the scope of this article.)

While the highest-quality corrections are likely to be achieved with a profile created using your specific camera model (and indeed, your specific lens units so as to cancel out sample variations), very acceptable results can be achieved with profiles created by your fellow photographers -- even if the precise camera model differs. Profiles are specific to either Raw or developed (JPEG, etc.) files, since developed files may already have lens corrections applied to them by the camera or other processing software.

And so, the purpose of this article: to help Pentax photographers share their lens profiles, and to summarize the available profiles. Following at the end of this post is a list of known profiles for first-party and third-party lenses on Pentax camera bodies.

If you have created a profile you'd like to share, or know of somebody who has shared a profile that isn't on our list, please either contact me privately to let me know, or simply reply to this article. I'll do my best to keep the first post in the thread updated with links to the latest profiles. (If you could let me know if I have your permission to add the profile directly as an attachment to this post, that'd be helpful. So would any information on how the profile was created -- body, focal lengths, apertures used, focus distances, and whether the profile is for Raw or developed images. If you know of profiles on other sites, please don't upload somebody else's profile here without their permission -- either provide a link to the site, ask them to join and share the profile here themselves, or both.)

Even if a profile already exists, don't feel shy about submitting your own alternative profile. There's a lot of leeway in profile creation, such as for example the number of focal lengths, apertures, etc. that are included in each specific profile. Adobe's software is designed to interpolate (read: guess) how lens characteristics vary between these user-defined sample points, and so profile creation is a balance between the accuracy of the profile, and the work involved in its creation. Lens sample variation also plays a part, and so do personal user tastes. It's possible that many users may find your alternate profile more to their tastes than an already existing one... :-)

(Note: For now, I've not had a moment to ask for permission from anybody to share their profiles as attachments directly in this article, so for the time being this list consists solely of links to other posts where profiles have been shared.)

Without any further ado, following are the profiles themselves:

Adobe's latest camera-raw (6.3) includes several new Pentax profiles. The list at the head needs updating.

There is a Adobe Lens Profile Downloader, maybe it can't answer ... how the profile can be share and being download...
Yes, we've mentioned the downloader previously. Unfortunately it's still not built into Lightroom or Photoshop / Camera Raw, and is bundled with software labeled prerelease, so I'd guess many (or most) users aren't going to download it yet.

Way ahead of ya, guys. Jump back to page four and you'll see I mentioned the updates to Camera Raw and Lightroom, and I've already added the new profiles to the list.

I have installed the profile downloader, but there are not much lensprofiles for Pentax lenses. Would it be an idea to upload all the lens profiles that we have here to Adobe?

Because I have tried to add lens profiles the way it is mentioned in this thread, but it simply does not work, I have no additional lenses that come up in Lightroom...

We can't upload the profiles here ourselves, as they're not our work. We can request the original creators do so, but it's entirely their own decision.

Installing profiles manually works just fine though -- many of us have done so. (I don't even have the profile downloader on my own system.)

If it's not working for you, you're probably not putting the profiles in the right place, or perhaps you've not restarted Lightroom after placing the profiles. (You have to do so.)

What's your operating system, and where are you putting the profiles?

Hi Mariano, welcome to the forum! The reason there isn't a link is because that lens is supported natively by Camera Raw and Lightroom. You don't need to download anything, so long as you're running the latest versions. Make sure you're using at least Camera Raw 6.1 or Lightroom 3.0, and you'll find the lens profile is already on your computer. Sigma themselves provided the data for the Adobe-supplied profile.

Hope that helps!

DA 18-135 Profile?

I have hunted around and it appears that a profile for the DA 18-135 hasn't been done. I have no idea how to do these things, but am hopeful some of the creative folk here might prepare a profile for this wonderful new lens.

You're correct, nobody's profiled that lens yet (or at least, if they've done so, they've not released the results publicly here.) It being such a relatively new lens, I'm not surprised.

Hopefully someone will do so, given time, but you might consider being that person yourself. The profile creator is free, and the process is relatively straightforward, if perhaps somewhat tedious. Everything you need to know to create a profile yourself can be found here:

I'm quite "mad" because there are not so many Pentax lenses available (From Pentax itself).
Looking at tamron for example, ... this means we have better suport buying from them then from Pentax GRRRR

I really want a good lens profile for DA 12-24/4!!!

JPG support from Raw based profiles

Great effort, thanks very much.

For those who do not know, it may be worth clarifying that each profile is created either from JPG (or TIFF) testchart shots, or from DNG testcard shots. The former type (only) will auto-detect and list out when a JPG image is being processed, the latter when a Raw image is being processed.

There is a straightforward "kludge" method of converting a copy of a Raw based profile so that it will show up for camera JPGs: Adobe lens profiles: Raw and JPG (LR3, ACR): Software / Retouching Forum: Digital Photography Review.

This is a single-line edit of the XMP file, merely changing a 'this is for Raw' entry from "True" to "False". Of course any in-camera JPG lens correction should have been disabled, if this is to produce the right results.

I hope this is helpful to people - RP
