Adobe lens profiles for Camera Raw, Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3
Posted By: knoxploration, 08-30-2010, 11:31 PM

Photographers using current versions of Adobe software including Camera Raw 6.1 or later, Photoshop CS5, and Photoshop Lightroom 3 all have a useful tool at their disposal, which can correct for geometric distortion (both barrel and pincushion), chromatic aberration, and lens vignetting -- all with a minimum of fuss. The feature relies on lens profiles, which can be created by the user community. (Adobe themselves also provide a modest number of lens profiles.)

The process of creating a lens profile has been designed to be relatively straightforward, and is achieved using a free Lens Profile Creator tool available from Adobe Labs. (Full instructions are available from Adobe in their Lens Profile Creator Calibration Chart Shooting Quick Start Guide, as well as the full Calibration Chart Shooting Guide, and are beyond the scope of this article.)

While the highest-quality corrections are likely to be achieved with a profile created using your specific camera model (and indeed, your specific lens units so as to cancel out sample variations), very acceptable results can be achieved with profiles created by your fellow photographers -- even if the precise camera model differs. Profiles are specific to either Raw or developed (JPEG, etc.) files, since developed files may already have lens corrections applied to them by the camera or other processing software.

And so, the purpose of this article: to help Pentax photographers share their lens profiles, and to summarize the available profiles. Following at the end of this post is a list of known profiles for first-party and third-party lenses on Pentax camera bodies.

If you have created a profile you'd like to share, or know of somebody who has shared a profile that isn't on our list, please either contact me privately to let me know, or simply reply to this article. I'll do my best to keep the first post in the thread updated with links to the latest profiles. (If you could let me know if I have your permission to add the profile directly as an attachment to this post, that'd be helpful. So would any information on how the profile was created -- body, focal lengths, apertures used, focus distances, and whether the profile is for Raw or developed images. If you know of profiles on other sites, please don't upload somebody else's profile here without their permission -- either provide a link to the site, ask them to join and share the profile here themselves, or both.)

Even if a profile already exists, don't feel shy about submitting your own alternative profile. There's a lot of leeway in profile creation, such as for example the number of focal lengths, apertures, etc. that are included in each specific profile. Adobe's software is designed to interpolate (read: guess) how lens characteristics vary between these user-defined sample points, and so profile creation is a balance between the accuracy of the profile, and the work involved in its creation. Lens sample variation also plays a part, and so do personal user tastes. It's possible that many users may find your alternate profile more to their tastes than an already existing one... :-)

(Note: For now, I've not had a moment to ask for permission from anybody to share their profiles as attachments directly in this article, so for the time being this list consists solely of links to other posts where profiles have been shared.)

Without any further ado, following are the profiles themselves:

Hi Sten, in which folder did you put the file? I have downloaded the lens profile of the DA12-24, the DA 55-300 and the DA18-135 and added them to the folder:

C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\LensProfiles\1.0

And strangely enough, I do have the lens profiles of the DA12-24 and the DA55-300 in LR now, but not the lens profile of the DA18-135...

Are ypou willing to share your version of the lens profile?

Hi Lampo,

I first tried to download the lens profile from SayK's post above on page 6 in this thread, where he attached the lens profile which he constructed and generously shared with all of us. I put it in the same folder as you did, but could not find it in Camera Raw (I have Photoshop CS5, not Lightroom).

Then I downloaded the Lens Profile Downloader from this website:
Download Adobe Lens Profile Creator - Adobe Labs
and used it to download the lens profile, and it worked! But the lens profile was not placed in that folder, so the Downloader obviously put it somewhere else. I think that it is SayK's lens profile which Adobe has accepted as a user lens profile, and perhaps user lens profiles reside in another folder? But the main thing is that it works when you use the Lens Profile Downloader.

Hi,

Would the 18-135 profile for the K5 work equally well (or almost equally well) with the K20d in lightroom. I am particularly interested in reducing CA. Haven't managed to try it myself as I'm still using LR2 for another couple of weeks on an old PC that won't run LR3. New PC for LR3 on order!

Thanks.

The FA 35mm F2.0 has been added in ACR 6.4.1. Unfortunately, I get better results without any CA correction.

Hi! Another question from a beginner. Do you use the downloaded lens profiles even if you use the Pentax K-7 in-camera lens correction? Will that produce an even better result or will it "over adjust"?

Use one or the other, not both. That will, as you guessed, over-correct.

(That said, if the profiles themselves had originally been made for use on JPEGS shot with the corrections enabled, they might be able to achieve a higher correction quality -- but it seems likely to me that the difference would be negligible and not worth the effort of making the profiles.)

So yeah, it's a one-or-the-other situation.

Thanks for your reply!

Testing the in-camera adjustment right now. The disadvantage is slow previews of the pictures, but it seems like the camera otherwise is just as quick (it only displays the last taken image).

If I understand it right you prefer making the lens adjustments afterwards since you take RAW-photos and might just as well do the correction there?

Raw is better than JPG in many ways, although it takes some time to treat in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). Lens correction in ACR has the advantage that you can also manually correct some distorsions like perspective faults.

What Sten said. With raw, I can decide what gets done to the picture after the fact, and fine-tune the process.

Remember, though, if you prefer in-camera corrections, you can process raws in-camera on recent Pentax models, and apply lens corrections in-camera when you process the raws there.

Has anyone been able to get the profiler off the macromedia/adobe website recently? I went there today to get the tool so that I could profile my FA 50 mm (I'm actually surprised no one has done this yet). The page isn't downloading the zip files (says that they can't be found on the server). Tried Firefox and IE.

OK, but it is not the FA* 28-70 f/2.8 - only the FA 28-70 f/4 AL...
