One could also loosen the rear element, as it's extremely easy to do with that particular lens. Would result in soft portraits, and can be reversed much easier than having to reinstall all elements.

Why not just leave it intact and just screw on a soft focus filter on the front?

Or go old school and just smear Vaseline on a cheap skylight filter.

I thought the M50/2 was a soft focus lens

Personally I like the M50 f2. It can be had cheap and is a wonderful training tool for new photogs exploring depth of field and low light for the first time.

I guess I am sentimental but I just hate seeing these old lenses destroyed when there are other alternatives such as non invasive attachments or post processing software or apps such as Instagram, but appreciate the creativity.

I have destroyed a couple of 2x converters to turn them into extension tubes myself in the interest of macro, so I am guilty of it myself.
