Build AC adapter for the Pentax K-r or K-30
Posted By: JimJohnson, 03-01-2013, 06:59 AM

Okay folks, this topic has bounced around in threads for some time now. Many folks wondering if it could be done and some folks say they have done this, but provided no directions or photos.

I've attached a picture guide on building such an adapter using minimal tools, minimal parts that are easily obtained, minimal time and spending only around US$15. The AC adapter will work world wide. It isn't the prettiest project I've ever done, but it is sturdy and gets the job done.

Personally, I hope to use mine to explore making short videos using time lapse photography.

Nice work. I presume you have a K-r as the power lead access via a tiny flap on the camera battery cover isn't there on my K-30. It does have a tiny captive rubber bung though that I hadn't noticed before.

Nice work, Jim. A comment on your "should work down to 4V". I made up an adapter for my K-5 which has a trim pot to adjust the voltage. Once it got down below 6VDC output bad things such as mirror flopping started. I wouldn't go much below the rated voltage.

Yes, 4v should be about the exhausted point for a set of AA batteries. Fortunately, this AC adapter is running about the same as a Lithium Ion battery. At least my camera gives me the 'battery fully charged' status symbol. Also, your K-5 only works with Lithium Ion batteries (or six AA batteries via the optional grip), correct? The K-r and the K-30 will also run with four AA batteries that will max out at 6v.

Right, forgot output the different power requirements. It would be useful to define the lower voltage limit, though.

A small point but I would recommend you use non-solvent based silicone sealant because most such sealant contains acetic acid that can leach out over time, and that could damage electronic components in the camera - that killed the LNB on one of my satellite dishes a few years ago after I "weather-sealed" it with the sealant, and I have heard similar stories of the results of using sealant that leaches this acid when used to seal electronic equipment
