Yes. I'm definitely interested to see what can be done.

Maybe others thought the same as I did and interpreted your questions as addressing paene exclusively?

In any event, finding ways to improve K-7 video output is currently not even in the TOP 50 of my priority list, not the least because I won't have a K-7 anytime soon.

Really, you'd want one real RAW video output, i.e., data before demosaicing. The approaches discussed in this thread will go some way but they cannot be quite as good as one that has access to pre-demosaicing data. If I had a K-7 and were really keen to get the best possible video output from it, I'd be actively thinking about the best possible post-processing. Right now, I'm just an interested bystander and would appreciate if the research and discussions would continue.

Lucky dog. You may have just invited a number of members to address you regarding AF speed, high ISO performance, etc.

Glad no know that Falconeye become a tester for Pentax!
You really deserv it!
Can i ask you some questions?
Can we control ISO in movie mode? (i know we can't, but any work around...)
In photo mode we can control de auto ISO range, this is usable in movie mode?
Can we at least see the iso value displayed in upper lcd?
And what about the shutter speed? it is fixed at some value? do we know in what values it operates?

Thanks! good testings!

Well I for one would like to see some samples right out of the camera and directed to me

also more feed back about the camera itself other than video. We all know you'd love providing us this

Another fresh video to analyse:

loged in and downloaded the original AVI file.
It's very grainy...
That's why i'm so concerned about the lack of ISO control in video mode.

I'll have a look into this.

So far, all of this is not visible, maybe not easily or not at all.

- Aperture can be easily controlled (either fixed = preset at start of recording or "auto" (probably also constant during recording)).

- Exposure can be locked (also during recording).

- EV compensation remains active (only at start of recording).

- ISO button says: "function not available in current mode"

Shutter, Iso, (or aperture in Auto) are invisible, on rear/top LCD or VF, or AVI file.

Of course, with ISO button and front dial, one could manual control everything if the firmware allows it. Currently, it doesn't. What is nice is that exposure can be locked/unlocked during an ongoing recording.

One more:

This is a difficult scene for the 1536x1024 mode (lots of contrast). Nevertheless, I made a 1080p version of it.

Enjoy

Note: I applied my enhancement method as described above. And scaled and cropped. So, this is not original footage anymore.

Below, I've uploaded the same but scaled to 720p. To check if there is any improvement in quality when going 1080p.

File-Upload.eu - Your free file hoster!

Note 2: 720p + 20% = 1536x1024; 1536x1024 + 25% = 1080p
(720p + 50% = 1080p)

UPDATE:
On special request, here is a link to the original AVI file (with audio) as out of camera (I had to find another file sharing solution as the file exceeds 100MB -- please somebody share with me if download worked):

http://www.2shared.com/file/6240480/3fa02f02/Pentax-K7-trekker-1024.html
Hint: Search the "download box" for a tiny text saying "Save file to your PC" in its bottom right corner ...

I only looked at the small Vimeo playback version (cannot afford the bandwidth for the large version atm). At this size it looks much more than acceptable!
First I thought I'm seeing panning judder but it was playback related only.

At the size I watched it, one cannot say anything significant, though. The "sweet cheeries" do no look grainy when viewed at the Vimeo playback resolution; near the original size, however, the grain shows quite clearly.

P.S.: Is it just me or does "*** quality" look like an expletive has been deleted?

You mean as in "▓▓▓ quality"?

Yeah, probably should read "★★★ quality"

Which stands for "geile quality"

Thanks for the replies about ISO, now i'm really scared if they don't change the firmware soon... The last link i post shows a video complitely deteorated with high ISO grain.

The 1080 upscale... i play it on a 1920x1200 monitor...it pixelates all over the place. It is better to stay 720 from camera and monitor or TV scales it, it looks more natural...just a little blured compared with real 1080 footage.

But thanks for try and showing it, it is one of the tests we are waiting to see. I'm glad that the video is really well stabilised by the SR and there's no sign of rolling shutter/gello efect!

Great work, keep going!
love to see some lowlight samples in 720p mode.

Yes.
I haven't given up yet, though

The lowlight department will need an examination of the influence of the camera's iso settings first. End of the week, maybe. My day to day business did not stop either
