P&S Contest #32 - Finding the Balance-Nature & Humans

Theme - "Finding the Balance-Nature & Humans"

The theme comes from, and judging will be by my 16yr old daughter, who's "composition" P&S shot of the Brooklyn bridge won toylas' #31 competition. (Regret that often she has a better eye than me..)

The emphasis should be on nature (preferably) landscape, but with a strong human element. The challenge is then to find a pleasing balance between those elements. This theme flows from one of her favorite pictures from a "wildlife photographer of the year" shot of a tree and it reflection in a truck rutted muddy gravel siding by Thomas Haney, see below:
http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/prne/nhm/37552/images/37552-thomas-haney.jpg

Attached is an example from "dad's" collection(Canon S2IS) that she said fitted the bill. This is a reflection in the window of our SUV of the contrast between the arid land and gravel road, and the lush green river bed as we toured the southern desert of Namibia.

*Preferably no* or slight post-processing. Color/contrast adjustments, rotate/crop etc are fine.

It would be nice if you added a line or two describing what you had in mind when you took the picture.

THE RULES
1. Have fun!
2. No 35mm, APS, or 4/3 SLR/DSLR cameras allowed. 110 film SLRs, 35mm and smaller rangefinder/viewfindercameras are allowed. No medium or large format cameras allowed.
3. Entries will close on June 30th, 2010.
4. Maximum image dimensions are 800x800 pixels.
5. List camera brand, model with entry for all to see.
6. THEME: "Finding the Balance-Nature & Humans"
7. Max of 3 photographs per person.
8. Winner will set up and judge next contest.

Go for it, and good luck. I just get to facilitate.

Regards
Kevin

Very interesting idea Kevin. It should be fun!

btw can we use some old shots? Or should we use only the ones clicked after the contest is announced?

I have no idea what the custom has been for previous contests, but I don't see benefit in limiting to new clicks. Old shots acceptable.

Thanks for that I would never be able to participate otherwise.
I never saw this requirement on previous contests either.

I must say this theme got me puzzled but then I realized landscapes with a human factor can be unusual depending on where you live. Here on the "old continent", you'd be hard pressed to find a landscape without a 'contamination' from human civilization.

But I think I found some examples where the human factor is an important contributing factor in the image as a whole and certainly in balance.

A very mild influence. The lines you see in the field are some crop just coming up.

Here the human factor, the lighthouse, the tower, the fence and the road, are the image.

Last, the small road leads you into the image, taking you towards the tree on the horizon.

All photos with Panasonic FX500

PS seems I get to go first again

Spot on the theme Bart. Nice post. I like #3, but we will have to see what my daughter thinks.

As you say, not much unaffected on your continent, but then again, I thought that I lived on the "old" continent...

Thanks, Kevin. Here's hoping your daughter shares your taste

And you're right about your living on even and older continent of course. It's just that we have been better in messing it up over here

Temple, Clouds and Forest

Pentax Optio A40, Program AE, 1/640 at f/15.4 with manual ISO setting of 800 (accidental, I had it on 800 earlier for low light.)

I saw this scene and told my fiancee to take a picture while we were out driving. Though I saw the scene and it is my camera, she did the actual trigger-pull. Hope you enjoy!

Still 19 more days of the world cup soccer tournament here in South Africa, but there are only 8 more days of this P&S #32 contest.

Post your post; fame and glory awaits...
