Point & Shoot Contest #34 "A Helping Hand"

THEME - "A Helping Hand"

This seems like a good way to show assistance, kindness, a rescue, etc by one or more human(s) to another being(s) of any species OR animals giving a 'helping hand' to a human or another animal. Might seem difficult to find such scenarios, so don't be afraid to enlist a friend to stage the shoot. Then, everyone wins. It is, after all, a competition and should require some effort.

It can be as simple as a squirrel taking a nut from your hand, caring for your child or elderly relative, rescuing an oil soaked animal, or chasing fire & rescue services (fire n flames rescues are always exciting); anything that fits the theme. You get the idea.

Since we're starting today, the contest will run until midnight Central (US) time, the 26th of September. This will allow many to join in.

Submissions can be Color or Black n White. New and old photos are welcome.

THE RULES
1. Have fun!
2. No 35mm, APS, or 4/3 SLR/DSLR cameras allowed. 110 film SLRs, 35mm and smaller rangefinder/viewfinder cameras are allowed. No medium or large format cameras allowed.
3. Entries will close midnight Central (US) time on September 26th, 2010.
4. Maximum image dimensions are 800x800 pixels.
5. List camera brand and model and Title/Name of each entry for all to see.
6. THEME: "A Helping Hand"
7. Max of 3 photographs per person.
8. Post processing is fine.
9. Winner will set up and judge the next contest.

Get out, have fun and shoot; it's what we do!

***The inspiration for this came from my best friend. She jumped out of my car as it slowed at an intersection in the dead of winter in Washington, D.C., ran to a homeless person that had no coat, took off the one she had recently purchased and gave it away.

I saw the BBC report on Kompasu. That's rough after all the flooding this year. Hope you didn't get any negative effect. I spent 13 months in Korea and enjoyed the stay. As for the video, if you had shot a still photo it would qualify... unfortunately this won't. There is still plenty of time to submit a photo.

I actually did shoot some, but not with the mindset that I was going to be submitting it to a contest or anything, so I didn't take a great deal of time or care with them. unfortunately.
Typhoon wasn't horrendous. Mostly went on when people were sleeping, so in the city just a few hours late in the morning for everyone. Lots of downed trees, but only 3 deaths.

Well maybe one turned out okay (Why is it resizing my 800x600 png and turning it into a jpg????)

Great picture, Ivoire!

I think this contest would have a lot more entries without such a hard-to-find subject. Personally I don't feel comfortable going out to look for this sort of thing with my camera. I appreciate that it's a good topic and one that many people like to see, but that doesn't change facts.

With other contests, it's relatively easy to keep a P&S on you and shoot basically anything to get the effect you want, or play on the subject at hand. With this one, I feel "stuck".

I know I could stage something, but that feels disingenuous.

I'll see you all next month.

Well, after some serious pondering, I decided to go with a more 'abstract' approach.
First, I thought about chasing ambulances or fire engines but chances are quite real I would end up with the 'helping hand' planted firmly on my nose for being so nosey

Hence, the abstract approach - all with Panasonic FX500.

Comforting

Reaching out

Bringing light into the darkness

I don't have any studio equipment so all of these are captured with natural lighting and 'some' post processing. I use LR so nothing all that complicated.

Thanks, G.T & ivoire.

I sure hope we get some more entries. It has been very quiet. Perhaps due to the excitements about the new cameras.

Bart, credits go where due!

I won't compete this time. I wasn't able to get a suitable picture.
