B&W can be extremely powerful - but it doesn't always add to every photo. Some people don't really seem to have an eye for seeing that (not meant in respect to anything posted in this thread, because the pics here have been very good)

I find myself doing what I used to do way back when in the darkroom - making sure I've got a strong black and a white white without the highlights and shadows blown out. That's usually the criticism I have of b&w's by digital users that haven't done film (or maybe just never thought about it) - making sure there's enough contrast and a strong black/white separation. And sometimes using contrast filters in the dark room seems like it was less work than me fighting with picasa or photoshop to figure out how to make it do it (I could of course actually read a manual or a how to book)

All of these were taken in Scotland with a Canon A70.

I'm glad I'm not judging these entries. Bart's "Winter Evening" is wonderful, and the second photo from Immunogirl is awesome. Excellent composition and exposure on both photos.

Cheers to all!

Bravo!

Who needs a SLR?

me.

*sniffle*

Mine's broken.

That's the only reason the 2nd & 3rd shot I posted were done with a point and shoot.

I would LOVE a DSLR, but alas I am in love with my X90.... a cross between both compact & DSLR

Yeah. I was trying to cheer myself up. We're rowing the same boat - mine's broken, too.

Honestly, though, I continue to be amazed at the quality shots P&S cams can produce. Now if only I had an ounce or two of vision and creativity!

Mine's off hopefully getting fixed.

I actually used a pretty crappy point and shoot for those pics, so I really shouldn't complain. The little waterproof point and shoots are lacking in a lot of ways from a photo quality standpoint, but hey, they're waterproof cameras that can take a lot of abuse and I've come to a compromise with mine, as long as I don't ever use the zoom and use exposure compensation, I can make it take a good pic.

I can't justify buying a good point and shoot on top of having a dslr & a waterproof point and shoot.

Thanks, Immunogirl!

I bought my P&S when my DSLR was (again) on it's way to Pentax.
It's more limited but it's fun.

Pana LX2. Converted to B&W in Elements 8 (need more practice at this - more comfortable with film)
thanks

After a long wait, here's my lackluster shots

All shot on BW400CN 35mm film using a Yashica Electro 35 GSN (Fixed 45mm F/1.7 lens). Apertures adjusted to allow proper exposure...it's all at Infinity so the aperture doesn't really matter much anyway, and I didn't pay attention. It's probably all between F/4 and F/11, and the Aperture Priority AE wouldn't tell me shutter speed, except that it's above 30 and below 500
