Birds from my garden

Here are my three entries, all taken with my Pentax X90
Attachment 98446
This is an African Hoopoe - a very shy and rare little bird, taken hand-held at maximum optical and digital zoom of 4225mm equivalent. Shake reduction on.

Attachment 98447
Two Turtle Doves enjoying the afternoon winter sunshine.

Attachment 98445
Common Ibis, or Hadeda, so named from their call.

Taken on Mt Monadnock NH while hiking with my kids more than a few years ago. All I had with me was my Canon P&S, and by the time it powered on and zoomed out bird #1 had gotten away. I caught bird #2 as the pilot was initiating a barrel roll off the ridge.

Thanks Bart. I had to brace the camera against a wall. Unfortunately the image quality degrades significantly, but sometimes its the only way you are going to get the shot. Those little Hoopoes are so shy and timid they won't let you get within 50 metres, and they are always bobbing their heads and moving...

I enjoyed this competition. There were some very creative ideas presented (and not officially submitted such as the crane idea by immunogirl and Barts crashed flying saucer) as well as a slew of images that made the judging difficult. So now for the results:

3rd place goes to Anton Magus for his Ibis close-up. I like the detail and pose he captured. Having done a lot of birding, I am well aware of the difficulty in getting the shot.

2nd place goes to kyteflyer for his kite capture. The foreground filled with the kite and the kite flyer in silhouette just makes for a great image

The winning entry goes to andreaffm for his roosting seagull image. I really like the contrasting light and darknessin the corners, the glint of light on the rail, the perspective of the railings and the general misty morning feel of his image. Plus, he managed to get 2 gulls in flight.

gt gets honorable mention for the new 747-8F capture

and exwintech also gets honorable mention for his detailed and colorful capture,

So thanks to everyone for their efforts in making this a great competition. I'm looking forward to andreaffm's upcoming competition #45.

Note to Jeff H..... is that a warthog that you captured?

Congratulations to Andreaffm on a very deserved win and to Kyteflyer for a brilliant composition, as well as to all the other entrants for really pushing up bar in these competitions. The higher the standard of entries the better - it shows us all just what can be achieved with our P&S cameras if we work at it.
Finally, thanks Ivoire for a great competition. I feel quite humbled that you awarded my Ibis third place from among such a great group of entries.
