Pentax Optio WG-2 In-Depth Video Review

My latest and greatest is an in-depth video review of the new Optio WG-2. Coincidentally, it seems like Pentax's new unilateral pricing policy has already kicked in...it used to be $368 and now it's back up to $399.

Here's the text review/sample photos: Pentax Optio WG-2 Camera Review - Introduction & Video Review - PentaxForums.com

I'm not going to lie, I think the video (from a production point of view) really isn't that great, but all the info you care about should be there! I basically ended up doing 4 takes of the whole review because of the K-5's stupid clicking sound (I gave up and tried using my phone, which stopped recording 15 minutes into the review without my realizing it, and then I went back to the K-5, ran into other issues, etc.). On top of that, it took an hour to learn how to use Premiere Pro (much less intuitive than Windows Movie Mater), and 2 hours to put all the clips together and edit out the bloopers.

So without further ado here's the video:

And a sample at 60fps:

Would a K-01 have worked better? Legit question - I'm not trolling.

Yeah the .mov format would have allowed me to use Movie Maker, wish I had it on me. I hope the next Pentax DSLR does what the K-01 does in video mode and more!

Yes, the K-01 had been great:

Thanks for posting the review. Based on sample pics I have ruled out the WG2 in favour of the Q, I think.

Yep, it's the lenses and processing that makes all the difference. If you just want a P&S, I wouldn't get the Q, though. You generally can't hold it with one hand because the zoom isn't built-in

THanks for the videos, Adam! The review video is a bit dark, which you should be able to correct in Premiere, but as you say there's lots of info there. Could you please provide links here to stills taken with the camera? I'd like to get an idea of how good or bad it is at different distances and it would be great to see some underwater stills or video, because that's a feature which really interests me. I'm guess that the RC plane landed so roughly because of the extra weight of the camera!

PS Disappointed that AF doesn't work in movie mode, because that probably makes it far less useful underwater depending on the DOF at infinity.

The pics are in the text review itself:

Pentax Optio WG-2 Camera Review - Sample Video and Photos - PentaxForums.com

Maybe the next model will be able to AF during video, but the DOF is pretty wide- I think it goes from ~1.5m to infinity.

You might be right about the plane, but I think the pilot screwed up the approach a bit also.

Thanks Adam! The waterproof Pentax cameras always seem interesting but if the IQ can't hold up, it's a hard sell. As you pointed out, there are limits to what they can do with the lens enclosed like that. I wonder if they reduced the zoom range if they could make it better?

Just curious, are there plans to do an official review for the Optio VS20 & Optio RZ18? (Mostly I am curious to see if Pentax digital point & shoots start improving a bit now that they're with Ricoh.)

Thanks again!

P.S. Just noticed, but as of this morning (April 1st) the pricing for the WG-2 on the Pentax Webstore is $349 so perhaps even with the new pricing strategy, they are making sure to keep prices inline (and online retailers should be adjusting their prices too, I would guess.)

At this time, there isn't- not enough interest, unfortunately.

Retailers either have to conform to the new (MSRP/MAP) prices or ditch Pentax. B&H have been forced to increase the prices on all DA and DFA lenses by 15-90%- see the complete story on our homepage!

Thanks for the review Adam. I am looking for some specific information about the intervalometer on the WG-2. Are the settings similar to previous versions such as the W90. I have been very happy with the W90 and am thinking about getting the WG-2 but I want to make sure the intervalometer will be useful for me .

I'd take a look at the WG-2's manual. I'm 90% sure that feature hasn't been changed since the W90 and is still there, as the two cameras actually resemble each other quite a lot.

For some reason the manual for the WG-2 would not load on my computer but I looked at the WG-1 and it looks pretty similar. So I bet it is still the same. Thanks alot for your help. I probably should have thought to look at the manual myself.
