Pentax Point & Shoot Competition #54 - Abandonment

Abandonment of persons, objects, houses, empty theatres, desolate buildings...
You name and frame it. Abandonment is everywhere.

Perhaps a bit more 'heavy' than the previous contests but I hope it will also inspire you to come up with some great entries.

The Rules

1. Have Fun!

2. Cameras
No cameras with sensors larger than 1"
No large format or camera typically requiring a tripod to use
No interchangeable lens cameras
No 35mm (D)SLRs or any camera weighing over 1 kg

Cameras permitted (cameras listed as acceptable here supersede rules above)
Fixed-lens 35mm and smaller-format film and digital rangefinder and viewfinder cameras
Interchangeable or Fixed-lens 110 film SLRs and Pentax Q
TLRs, 6x9, 6x7, 6x6 and 6x4.5 Medium Format "Folding", "Box", or "Holga-style" scale focus cameras (subject to 1 kg weight limitation)

3. Entries will close on May 31st, 2012, at 18 00 GMT (6 PM )

4. Maximum image dimensions are 1024x768 pixels

5. Max of 3 image entries per person, from archives or fresh. Entries may be withdrawn or changed

6. List camera brand, model with entry for all to see, and exposure data would be nice.

7. Post processing is fine.

8. I will "like" all entries

9. Contest winner determines the rules, selects theme, sets closing date and judges next competition

10. Have Fun! even with this perhaps a bit sombre theme

I'm looking forward to what you'll come up with!

Yes, I forgot to mention, Optio P80 "as usual" from archive of course. Taken on May, 1st 2011.
That's a theme I sometimes think I should explore, some wreckages, boneyards, abandoned factories or something... but I just haven't made it yet.

"Abandonment" is a very interesting theme Bart.
I suspect that most of us won't have anything like a winner in our archives, so we will have to get out and shoot specially for the contest. I look forward to that.

OK, Christo, we give up. Is that the original wagon your ancestors used to travel from Capetown to Graaf Reinet, or was it someone's first attempt at building a combined harvester?
Of course, if you lived in KZN all that metal would have long ago been stolen and sold for scrap, the timber would now be recycled into "informal housing" and someone would have made a land claim on your property saying the rock under the back axle was the headstone of their great-grandfather's grave.

Whatever it is, I must say you get some really great images from that Nokia N8. Well done.

Jammer, dis nou duidelik. Die ding is 'n 2,5 liter ossewa turbo. Ek het die turbo agter nie raakgesien nie.

Hi Anton, it is actually an old harvester as far as I know. I shot this at an agricultural museum near Port Alfred. This is a few km out of town, perhaps they're too lazy to "redistribute" those few old rusted pieces of iron

One of the reasons my wife is in the process of selling her farm.

Also right on theme, Christo!

Glad you like the theme, Anton. I know some people who specialise in this kind of images.
If not, then indeed a field trip is in order.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) opportunities are everywhere.

PS always amuses me to see how closely related Afrikaans is to Dutch .

@ Bart

Some years ago I spent quite a long time in Belgium and had absolutely no problem communicating with Flemish-speakers.
I could easily understand Dutch, but Dutch-speakers had a little difficulty understanding me.

This is going to be fun!

Great entries so far. Maybe this month I can shoot *and* develop my entries myself now that I have the capability to process BW film at home.
