I noticed that zoom only works in video mode if I select digital zoom. Why is that? Maybe I should be asking what's the difference between digital & optical zoom? Then again, maybe I should bust out the owner's manual and do some reading?

Digital zoom is basically scales pixels to make things appear closer, but leads to lower resolution. Optical zoom is real zoom which uses the camera's lens to magnify the image.
