Ed,

Your lovely spider pic should come in handy for one of the Point and Shoot Camera Contests we have here. #59 is up right now, and the theme is Doorways.

I'm pretty sure I can't compete with fastback's watercolor...

But, I inverted it, sepia'd it, cropped, gave it a border, and fiddled some more

This is a challenging image being a night scene, so here is what I did in Photoshop.
The original is a color image but it looks black & white which makes it a bit cold and stark, so I have changed the tones to warm it up.
It still looked a little dark so I lifted the exposure a bit trying not to lose detail from the top of the arch while making it as bright as possible.
Because the arch is square I cropped the image to square keeping the tubular sculpture prominent as its curves contrast so well with the square arch.

Its not as radical as some of the previous (and very good entries) but I think it accentuates the interesting detail.

Seems like you achieved all you set out to attain, Anton.

The square crop certainly has its merits.

@Anton: I like the detail in the arch

Here's my second attempt. I took the "if you can't beat them, join them" approach with the noise again.

Cropped in PS, added red filter B&W, reduced noise and added grain in LR3.

@samtr87: This is a difficult image. When you try to lighten it up to see any foreground detail, the image is very noisy, and when you clean up the noise you lose the detail. I really wanted to get a good view of the pipe sculpture, but the better that looked the worse the arch itself looked... Also, I got worse results going to B&W - it was somewhat better left in color. I am now trying a completely different approach which seems to be showing some promise. If it works out anything like what I want, I will post the results and the technique.

Looks almost like a high iso film, Sam.
Certainly appealing.

Will no one else take Bart up on his challenge? Where's the sense of adventure? Lets put those imaginations to work.

I decided to stick with the original, and to try to keep it more photographic, even though heavily processed. Cropping makes the inherent noise more apparent and I have an aversion to noise (as you'll see).

For the first, I simply played in photoshop with Levels, Curves and exposure. In the second, I used Topaz Clean 3, keeping the color of the first (I worked from the first adjusted shot for the remaining two). In the third, I used Topaz clean 3 followed by Nik Software Silver Efex Pro. I also have Topaz B&W effects, but Nik's is unbeatable (IMO of course)

Great results, Sue.
You did very well with the noise, given the challenging image.
And kept a photographic feel.

I see judging is going to be difficult.
But don't let this stop anyone from taking a shot at it

Time is running short.

Good stuff Sue!!!
I especially like the B&W

I'm new here, and learning alot from you guys... especially when it comes software. I've been working with stone chisels and wooden hammers compared most folks around here. I just updated my Elements 5 program to 10 the other day, and installed a copy of Lightroom 3 which I haven't even opened yet. Now I have to look into a few of these other programs that you guys are using.
