Not sure if it is a hardware limitation. The nikon p7000 had a firmware release that was reported to have noticeably sped up raw write speed. Wish Ricoh would do the same for the MX-1, if possible.

Firmware updates for point and shoots are very rare. The MX-1 doesn't seem to be having any stability issues. The slow RAW processing time is likely a hardware limitation.

A faster SD card helps with the RAW processing times, I'm using a Samsung 16gb class 10 card and hardly notice any lag when shooting RAW+....it's wayyyy faster than my K100D when processing RAW. I don't see where an update is needed to the firmware any time soon.

I bought a 600x Class 10 Pro LEXAR 16Gb 90MB/s card for the Q as the RAW writing was slow on the Sandisk Extreme 16Gb 30MB/s class 10. It made absolutely no difference, so the speed of the card isn't the limiting factor for the Q at least.

I can't comment on the Q, I've never used one. But I've only seen the MX-1 lag maybe once and it was hardly long enough to notice, the preview shows up instantly every time no matter what img format I shoot with...I normally shoot RAW+JPEG. I guess coming from a K100D shooting RAW I'm just use to some lag, because it lags all of the time.

I have the Samsung Pro Series 16gb class 10 UHS-1 card in all three of my digital cameras. (80mb read 40mb write)

I'm not too bothered by the Q's RAW writing speed, it's not a camera I use where I need fast writes.
I'll have an MX-1 either today or early next week depending on delivery times and have a new unused Lexar 400x class 10 I'll probably use with it (though it is being shipped with a free FLU card )

Sandisk and Lexar rate their cards differently. Lexar 90MB/s is read speed. The Sandisk Extreme Pro's are rating their write speed. Using something like "Blackmagic Disk Speed Test" you can measure the write speed of your cards directly. My class 10 Lexar was writing at around 22 mb/second, the Sandisk was considerably faster. I think it shaved about 2 seconds off the RAW write speed on the Q.

With so many fakes out there it's not always certain that you can get a genuine card.
I buy mine from reputable dealers, they cost a little more but I know I'm getting the genuine article.
Remember, Sandisk were found guilty by court of misleading figures a few years ago and were sued by Lexar as a result of distributing misleading 'comparative' information which damaged LEXARs rep which directed people to Sandisk.
All I know is that the two cards I mentioned perform identically in the Q

Once I have the MX-1 in my eager hands, I'll run a proper test and report back.

My Lexar's came from Adorama and the Sandisks from Amazon and B&H. Give one of the drive speed test programs a try. They do several read and write stress tests and will tell you the read and write speeds of the cards The Sandisk Extreme Pro cards writes about 50% faster than the Lexar Professional class 10 cards I have. Just tried RAW+JPG on the MX-1 and the Sandisk was about 2 seconds faster there as well. The Sandisk cards are about a year newer than the Lexar's so they likely are a newer generation. I'll try them on a Sigma (huge files) and see if there is a difference tehre.

On my Fuji X Pro 1 there is a larger difference between the two. Shooting in continuous mode I can take almost twice as many shots before the camera's buffer fills.

"Remember, Sandisk were found guilty by court of misleading figures a few years ago"

The info I saw was 14 years ago and apparently Lexar dropped the claims after getting an injunction that Sandisk should change wording on a chart from "click to click" to "release to click." The two were engaged in multiple lawsuits claiming patent infringement along with advertising claims. On a quick search I didn't see any sort of "guilty" verdict or damage awards.

My MX-1 turned up this afternoon
After I charged the battery I threw in the Lexar card and tried a few shots in DNG. Dunno where the complaints come from. Writes fast enough for me.
And this camera feels great, has good heft (I like heft) and feels solid. Looks classy too.

Getting dark now, stuff to do - will follow up anon..

Have fun with the MX-1, it is a sweet little camera. I like the silver top!

@Steve.Ledger -- just read the specifications for the MX-1, and I think I've figured out why you bought it.
Not the traditional brass top.
Not the excellent image quaity.
Not the useful TAv setting.
...no, the REAL reason was the rear-facing IR sensor!
Hey, Pentax, why didn't you put that on my K-01?

The brief time I had to play with it, the problem was not with previewing the shot you've just taken. The problem was the camera cant function while its writing, you cant cant access any menu options or take another shot. It definitely makes you think before you take the next picture knowing there's going to be a 2+ second pause for the next one.

+1 for Mooey's statement. It is frustratingly slow between shots when the camera locks up.
