Pentax Compact Camera Post Processing Contest #23

Sorry that it took until today to post a picture for this month's contest.

I especially want to apologize for not congratulating Mooey, and Ivoire, in addition to everyone in my response. I was at work when I responded; had to type it out fast, and as such neglected many details.

The picture posted for this month was taken with a Super-Tak 35/3.5 and K-01. So, not a compact camera, but the contest is about post-processing so I hope it doesn't matter.

Anyway, the picture is of a complex of buildings on an abandoned Navy base. The whole former base has a very creepy feel to it; many buildings are literally falling down -- lot's of neglected history -- which this picture doesn't immediately capture, but it could with some post-processing (ala Terry Gilliam).

The Rules
1. Have Fun!
2. Use any Post Processing Software and techniques.
3. Entries will close on May 31, 2014 at midnight Eastern Standard Time (a.k.a. New York time).
4. Maximum image dimensions for entries are 1024x768 pixels
5. Max of 3 image entries per person. Entries may be withdrawn or changed
6. List software used, as well as your method, with your entry so we can all learn.
7. There are no limits or restrictions - make the subject image into whatever you want!
8. Do not copy or alter other entries.
9. Contest winner determines the rules, selects theme, sets closing date, and judge’s the next competition.
10. Have Fun

The file is .jpg only and is available here:

Thanks to all, and I'm looking forward to seeing the interpretations that come from this.

Great photo for PP. Should be some very cool effects produce for this one.

Entry#1... sharpened a bit to give more of grunge look. Applied Nik color efx dark contrast filter for more grunge. Dodged a few areas in CS6

Ivoire,

I love the way your first entry brought out the "peeling paint" aspect of both the wooden building in the middle and the large chimney.

Your second entry is great. It has an apocalyptic feel to it, which is what one feels when they are there while being arrested for trespassing! I really like the grittiness of it.

On both, I like your horizontal crop -- getting rid of the stairs and the building number. Good choice, it helps the picture a lot.

It was a great photo to work with, ghl!

Ivorie and Todd your entries are awesome! Love, the details and mood of your second entry, Ivorie. And Todd, your cooking yielded a fabulous result. Is this a Gimp recipe?

This one was done in Lightroom 4. A little exposure adjust, re-darkened the sky, and just a nudge of the vertical perspective slider.

Todd,

Nice work! I like the stacking of the wooden structure (old Post Office) from two to three stories. The looming feel it brings to the image is great and is something I would never have thought of -- I like it!

I also noticed you got rid of the building number (on the left) which was very distracting, and the blue signs on the old Post Office.

The contrast you brought out of the clouds is also very nice, and what you did here also brings a more ominous feel to the chimney.

Good stuff!

Chemtech,

I really like the feel of your second submission.

The way the old Post Office is accentuated is very nice.

The perspective correction is better in your first submission -- as the chimney is leaning to the left in the second submission -- but the overall visual impact of your second submission works for me!

You brought a clear distinction between foreground and background -- especially with the chimney -- that works really well. I also like the sense of foreboding that your second submission brings with the contrast between the clouds, the chimney, and the old Post Office.
