Full-Size Samples of Pentax W60!!!

Hello All,

There are some samples released on Pentax Japan website.
Optio W60 PENTAX JAPAN

I think there's kinda much more noise than I could accept in those iso-100 portraits (but they keep much detail). Hopefully Pentax will have an update firmware fixing this before it's available on the market.

Hmmm the backgrounds appear to be quite noisy...

I mostly have problems with the colors... Hope they can do better than that!

Well, I pre-ordered mine this afternoon... I hope I get it in time for my Scouts summer camp! I can't wait for the beach photos

The colors looks real good but I agree that with iso 100 the noise is rather obvious.

Close, but no cigar.

Reduce pixel count to improve noise performance.

The thing is, the noise is not colour blotching, it's more luminance than chroma. Colour appears in tact and bleeding is minimal. I have a Panasonic FX01 28mm compact and the bleeding at ISO80 is unforgivable. Reds and blues are crucified.

I reduced these doen to a 5x7 print resolution, sharpened a tad and it looks OK.

Now, in saying that, these samples are taken in the shade but still in good light. Drop the light levels or introduce harsh sunlight and the samples would be much worse IMHO.

Off topic a bit here, but what would it take, technicallywise, for a camera like the w60 to have RAW mode? And how much would raw mode add to the msrp? Considering the conditions that the w60 has to work in, wouldn't a raw mode allow more flexible pp? And another thing, how can 30% more pixels with the roughly the same size sensor give better iq? I'm gonna wait until some more photos to show up, but for now I'm really doubt it can beat w30's iq. I have no interest in Oly's w1030, what's the point to go that deep when it can even take good pics in good lite?

I don't know where the hostily towards the Oly 1030 comes from, but pixel for pixel, I would be surprised if the Pentax comes out any better...

RAW would be a nice extra, and it would make me consider the Optio W60, but to implement RAW, you have to add faster electronics. On most compact camera's RAW is fairly unusable because of the long time in between shots... To make RAW worthwhile they should add extra buffer memory, which, of course, adds to the final price...

Wel, my W60 just shipped out today! Expecting delivery tomorrow.

I'll try it out this weekend and post a short review.

I'm not expecting DSLR quality out of a point and shoot, but a camera I can play with at the beach, at camps and most importantly when I'm on fire calls should prove to be very interesting.

Good for you Pat, sounds like you're going to have some fun with the new camera! Sometimes my work finds me in small (<20') boats in sort of rough water. I feel compelled to bring a camera but really chicken out on bringing my K10D, no matter how water resistant it may be. A water proof camera would be a great option.

I'll be watching for the pictures!

When zooming in, I think it looks okay. Noise characteristics are acceptable too, for a P&S.
For what I would use it for, I think it would do fine. I’m glad they continued the series.
