Transitioning to a relic...

Interesting theme! Here's one from me, Samsung Note 4 (the non-exploding kind ), tweaked in Snapseed.

I like your image, isb.deep, and I would be happy to have it as a background image

Here is my entry:

A Zinnia from my mother's garden. Shot as the light of day was transitioning into night. Also, the transition from fall to summer, with a summer flower shot by the light cast by a Fall sun. (The shadows on the house are something I only really notice in Autumn.)

Shot on Fuji Instax 210, full automatic, with Close Up adapter. it's super-sharp for 100% plastic optics The photo of the print was shot with a Samsung Galaxy S5. No PP. I was going to scan the print, but I think this is more organic. (You can shoehorn the theme and say that the transition from real object to physical photo to digital photo counts.)

Great idea, Erik!

Plastic seems to have come a long way

Thank you! and I am constantly impressed by the output from the Fujiroid cameras. a $64 camera shouldn't make shots that nice.

I'm guessing you have an adapter with an iris that fits the Q?

I used a 1-1/4" rubber washer with a 3/8" hole (get at a hardware store) which fits inside a cheap 110PTX adapter giving the lens an effective f-stop of 4.5, which seems to be optimal for the best balance of sharpness and diffraction. The washer may appear to be too big but just poke it in from the back; it will fit snugly, arched toward the back of the lens so the hole is right behind the rear of the lens. When used without one (f2.8) the 50mm is a little soft. I've got the 06 zoom (45mm on the long end) and although it is a little sharper, I like using the 110 50mm for its much better manual focus. I have grown to like shooting at a fixed f-stop, the lens is always at optimum resolution, and one less variable to contend with, YMMV.
I have a Micro 4/3 adapter for the Auto 110 lenses on the way, and I'll have to try your waterhouse stop trick. I have no doubt it's sharper at f/4.5 than f/2.8, the Pentax A110 lenses are superb but what lens isn't just a bit sharper stopped down?

A diffraction calculator for the E-PL1 says that the diffraction limit will likely be f/7.1 on a Micro 4/3, and on your Q it says it's F/4.

Diffraction Limited Photography: Pixel Size, Aperture and Airy Disks

But diffraction always looks sharper than defocus, so even diffracting slightly at f/4.5 it will look better than wide-open softness at 2.8.

Thanks for the tip!

OK, it is now 11PM on Friday September 30 and here are my thoughts:

zman- great tone control with the ice and dark B/G; Nice use of DoF with the flowers, not always easy with a simpler camera
Bart- Nice Fall scene, love the leading lines in the field; Nice light on the flower and interesting shadows in the cemetery
surfur- Nice shot of the Kingfisher (?) but not enough of a transition in the image
chemtech- I get the transition in the first shot, but a stronger composition is needed; GREAT lion, nice and tight; great sunset with the plane
Uncle Vanya- Very nice transition of light, but the cars are distracting
isb- great use of the foliage and rock
unix- good picture in picture but some background elements are distracting
Prof- nice variety of textures
barondla- nice close-up/macro of snakes, and a double header!

Thanks for sharing and contributing everyone! And the winner is......
this was not easy...

Chemtech for the lion- with transition of sleep to wake, a close second is zman for the melting ice cube

Well done all!

Congratulations, to zman and really all who entered; this was a fun theme.

Thank you, BigDave for hosting and all the work of judging.

I am honored to host the next theme and will get it up and running soon.
It was a pleasant surprise that my sleepy Lion mug was chosen.

Nice choices. My distracting cars were intended to be a juxtaposition against the natural sky but I can see how they can be distracting and how the shot might be better with fewer transitions rather than so many. You judge and we accept. Thank you for doing this and it was a nice topic.
