Weathersealed Ricoh Theta?

Any demand for something like this? I think it'd be cool to have a 3D camera at Burning Man, or other places with terrible weather.

IPX7, so not rated against dust, unfortunately.

Interesting idea but too early. It need to be a premium Theta, in this and in other ways as well to justify a higher price point. It's too early to differentiate the product.

I saw a Theta tear down on the web. The internal battery is a standard issue Ricoh Q battery and the internal storage is a standard 'major brand' MicroSD card in a standard card slot - with no external access. There's a small PCB, and then the switches and lens assembly. It's really a simple device. Aside from the lens assembly the most complex part is the heat shielding.

I believe they want to keep the price down and sell millions of these things as 360 Imaging enters the mainstream. Raising the price now - differentiating the product - is probably early; when market dominance is established (Ricoh has First Mover advantage) they'll want to differentiate the product to fragment the market as a barrier to entry against competitors.

P.S. I saw a Roger Cicala tear down of a AW dSLR that went to Burning Man. The entire inside was ruined (he was 'unhappy'). It's just too dusty there. Spend the $300 as part of the experience and plan to throw it away.

I see what you mean about the Theta. It just means it's not the right product for me, yet.

I also saw that tear down, but I think we'll just agree to disagree. I have memory problems, and the photos I took there help me remember the experiences I had there far better than anything else I could have spent the money on.

I would suggest this as a cheap solution. Wrap it a few times around the opening at the bottom and it should seal it quite well:

Huh. I'll probably pass on the Theta for now, to protect my poor poor wallet, but I'll probably pick this up if I need to weatherseal my new Cactus flashes.

Watch out if they heat up. It's basically a wax in a form of film, so it can be a pain to take off if it heats up nearby its melting temperature.

That's a good warning... for flash use... at Burning Man.

I have this case. I'm gonna drop an O ring in there to see if I can make it dust resistant.
