Went through the same exercise 2 weeks ago.
My short list was G9, Samsung NV and Canon720.
All have manual controls and optical viewfinder which I wanted.

G9 appears to have very mixed reception.
Samsung had reported power problems and 'iffy' menu system.
Bought the 720. Smallest sensor of the 3 but the images for a P&S are very, very good.
$200 Australian made it the cheapest by far.

I have NOT gone over to the dark side! The K20 still reigns supreme in our household.

If my Oly. C-750 UZ was smaller I'd sell you that at a low price.
Sorry to ear about the P&S.

Dang. I thought I was the only one to have crappy luck like that. Sorry!

have you considered the ricoh gx100?

I love mine. It also has a 24-72mm lens (critical wide end for me), true manual controls, raw capture, and it's really very well designed (nice metal body, pocketable but also with a decent grip, all black).

The gx200 just came out with only a couple minor upgrades so you can pick up the gx100 at a good price. This camera was selling for $699 just last year and I picked one up for $425. They might be even less expensive now.

The only two authorized resellers in the US are adorama and popflash.com.
