Point and Shoot Competition #119 - music

kwb asked me to run this contest since john5100, the winner
of #118, hasn't visited the community since Nov. 20. Hope he is just busy and that everything is fine. I looked at john's postings to try and pick a compatible theme. John is a very accomplished, award winning music photographer. So the contest theme this month is Music. It can be musicians playing, musical instruments, hi fi or PA equipment, or any other interpretation.

Rules:
1. Always have fun!

2. Cameras:

No cameras with sensors larger than 1" (some exceptions below).
No large format or camera typically requiring a tripod to use.
No interchangeable lens cameras (some exceptions below).
No 35mm (D)SLRs or any camera weighing over 1kg.

Cameras permitted (cameras listed as acceptable here supersede rules above):
Mobile phones, old and new, iPods, tablets, toy cameras.
Fixed-lens 35mm and smaller-format film and digital cameras (Fuji X100 and GR OK).
Interchangeable or fixed-lens 110film SLRs and Pentax Q.

ANY CAMERA BRAND ALLOWED.

3. Entries will close December 31, 2017 midnight CST.

4. Maximum image dimensions are 1024x768 (ish) pixels.

5. List camera brand and model with entry for all to see, and exposure data would be nice.

6. No restrictions on when the entries were taken.

7. Contest winner determines the rules, selects theme, sets closing date and judges the next competition.

8. Enter up to three images, however you may change your entries as many times as you like up to the contest closing date/time.

Thanks
barondla

barondla - thank you for the kind word and thank you for taking the reins. I'm sorry that I didn't respond earlier as I was out of town with family so all is well.

Hi all,

Here are some examples that might give you some ideas.

The first one of Gene Simmons of KISS was made with my Sony HX5V and the second one of Third Eye Blind was made with my RX100.

Have fun as music photography is a blast!!

John

Not entering this competition, just having fun.

RX100 did well tonight given that I was at ISO 1600 and I edited on my iPhone 8 Plus with LR Mobile

Come on guys, there are lots of opportunities for music this time of year. Piano players playing Christmas music, piano keys, CDs, LPs, stereo, street musicians...

Not for the contest, K3 used here - Music fans going wild as an example

My entry with Pentax Q7 and 06 telephoto at 17.7mm, f/2.8, 1/1000 sec, ISO 1600.

Holiday music by k kwb, on Flickr

I used electronic shutter so the strings look wavy due to rolling shutter effect. 1/1000 is pretty much the slowest I was able to use so all strings look wavy because the frequency of open high E string (rightmost in the picture) is about 330Hz, that's one cycle per 1/330 seconds, which is only about 3 times longer than the exposure time. The slower the shutter, the blurrier the strings become, starting from high E.

Happy holidays everyone!

This was a difficult contest to judge. I own and love tube electronics. The pipe organ has greater power and range than any other acoustical musical instrument. Red is a favorite color. Live concerts are great. Using a new technique to photograph moving guitar strings is awesome. All the entries are superb.

After much deliberation the winner is Cipher with Curtiss A. Like the high ISO grain and gritty take on live music. Congratulations Cipher! Now you get to set up the 1st contest of 2018. Can't wait to see the theme.

Thanks to everyone for entering. Special thanks to john5100 for adding motivational images.
