anyone know of an inexpensive P&S camera that is a) not too expensive and b) has little or no shutter lag?

I'm not aware of any digital P&S that doesn't have shutter lag. Film P&S's can be picked up really cheap though.

the slowest part of a P&S is the focusing b/c of the Contrast Detect method. the fastest ones are ones that enable Manual Focus. DP1, Ricoh GRD's, Canon G's (Although that still has a slow response)

All inexpensive cameras are not too expensive by definition :-)

However, just about any will have some shutter lag, which can be minimized but not eliminated in some shooting circumstances with good technique, such as pre-focusing.

Look into the fuji finepix f700 refurbs on amazon. I got mine for 70 dollars. Used to be 500. Very little shutter lag, great fuji lens. So under the radar it is not even a cult camera despite better dynamic range than other compact. Low megapixels so bad for pixelpeeping. Great for printing photos.

My heart was broken by a Fuji F700 . It was a great point-and-shoot (good in low light, active AF instead of crappy passive contrast detect AF) but eventually the sensor died. Sensor failure was unusually common in the F700 and similar models (google "fuji f700 sensor failure").

RE SpecialK's note: look for a focus lock function in your current (or next) point-and-shoot camera -- this can decrease shutter lag significantly.

Agree with your comments. I should have mentioned the sensor issue and the fact it has raw. In terms of the sensor failure I am hoping the refurbed models are less prone. It is so cheap I bought a spare and very cheap waterproof housing.

I would have thought that the refurbished ones are some of the ones that were former victims of sensor failure.

The Fuji S1000 FD looks a good buy at $182 (Amazon) 10mp, 12x zoom, heck it's got a lot of great features, I might get one for the wife.
Anyone got experience with this one?
