Thank you Barondla, that's a a fine combination of smooth and rough! I don't know what the spiky thing is, seems like a tiny cone of a tree?

Everybody, you still have one week left! Don't overthink, please post something or this will be the least popular P&S competition, ever!

Here's one that is a bit subtler. Old weathered rocks from Joshua Tree National Park in California. iPhone 5c.

Thanks kwb. It is from a Sycamore tree. They start off green and smooth, packed with seed. Would have been nice to find a green one to pair with this one, but it is too late in the year.

Thanks,
barondla

Nicely seen, David!

In the first picture, I see rough to smooth(-ish) to rough transition of water itself as my eyes move from the foreground to the background. Another smooth and rough contrast!
The second one, though it also features water and rocks, has a totally different feel to it.

Both are great entries, thanks Cipher!

Interesting triple-attack of smooth shadow, smooth-but-not-really-smooth repeating pattern of radiator and rough-looking pattern of the butterfly. Thanks for the second entry, barondla!

All, you still have one day to shoot something and enter!

Dear all, thanks for your quality submissions!

I had to think for a long time, and the winner for this contest is Bart's smooth ceramic and rusty spike wire! Congrats Bart, it's your turn now!

Each participant had something very strong to offer to be honest, but a few things set Bart's entry apart to me. I like that I can immediately see what is smooth and what is rough without explanation, which in itself is a powerful thing. In other words, I don't have to use my left brain to appreciate the smooth-and-rough aspect of the picture, if I'm making sense. I also liked that the main subjects are presented as big and relatively simple shapes in the frame yet well-isolated from everything else by the combination of DOF (great use of closeup), great lighting and color. Smooth and rough are displayed in a visually interesting way as per the contest rules. I recently found that I like rusted steel texture, so additional point for that

Thanks again everybody, see you in the next contest!

This is unexpected
Thanks, kwb! And congratulations to all the participants. I almost didn't make it this time.
I definitely agree about needing to use the rational part of the brain.
For me photography is an escape from my day-to-day live, my job, where it's all about the rational mind and solving "puzzles".
And one that absorbs much too much of my time

I'll try to come up with a theme for the next iteration as soon as possible.
