Hi, all.

I am trying to find a web site from which I can download at no cost a copy of the Operating Manual for the Pentax Optio 50L. It's 85 pages, and I've found lots and lots of sites that have it available, but either at a cost (and then they want a credit card) or require a log-in which means giving away my e-mail to somebody who will sell it to even MORE spammers.

I've checked the forum here and found an astonishing thread with hundreds of links to the original Ricoh/Pentax manuals site, but the link to the Optio 50L is a dead link. I also surfed the Ricoh site for manuals for discontinued models, and it's not in there.

It's nothing urgent, but my wife has started using that camera a little more lately and I can't find the original manual. Heck, I had a hard time figuring out how to put the correct date/time onto the thing after replacing dead batteries, and finally stumbled on the dial selector switch's little "tools" icon, which took me to the set-up menus.

I guess I should just be happy that the thing works really well after 17 years, and having been dropped onto concrete from halfway up a fire tower when it was only a year old.

At least I can view the manuals on-line from some of the manuals sites, but I'd like to be able to have a copy resident on the computer.

Got up this morning and logged in to the PF's and found all of your replies...thank you VERY much for the effort.

Unfortunately the 50L is a completely different animal from the s50, lacking a viewfinder and with completely different control buttons and arrangements. While some of the screen menus are similar they are different enough to not match those of the 50L. Heck, I can't even find an SD-card door on this little bugger; it must rely entirely on internal memory. Fortunately it uses the same USB-to-micro-USB cable that my DSLR's do so I can dump the pictures from it to the computer via cable (transfer rate is pretty slow, but they're only 5MP files so it's not too bad).

The only real issue I've had with it is that it chews up the two (2) AA batteries fairly fast even when not in use.

UncleVanya: Thanks for the disposable e-mail concept, but I hate setting up even g-mail accounts. I've used a couple back when we were selling our house and hadn't set up our new ISP at the new house, but the dreaded G-word company has shut those down for lack of use.

I was really just hoping that I had overlooked something simple, but this 50L appears to be a relatively unknown animal and like most cryptids information on it is hard to find.

Thank you so much for finding that.

I gotta tell you, the first thing I did even before replying to your post was to grab the camera off the desk, open up the battery door, and kick myself in the behind for never having seen an SD card sitting in the slot next to the batteries. I feel like a complete fool for never having noticed it sitting there after 17 years of changing batteries. It's got a 1 GB card in it, which is apparently the limit for this camera, and I've never come close to filling it up.

The ".pdf" file is now safely ensconced on my hard drive, which will be backed up on Time Machine in due course (every few months).
