When I'm on the water, an OptioWP lives on a lanyard around my neck and tucked into my shirt pocket. Often I have it when I also have my K10d with me.

My backup is a Canon Powershot S60. 5MP, full manual or automatic controls, RAW, 28mm-100mm (35mm equivalent). It has never failed me.

Panasonic Lumix TZ3. Nice compact camera with Leica 28-280 lens and 3 aspect ratio. Alas, there is no manual setting, and it got lousy JPEG compression that killed most details when you're pixel peeping. It's okay for daylight use and 4x6 prints.

Attached is a pic with wide aspect ratio selected in-camera. 4.6mm(28mm eqv) f3.3 at 1/200s, resized to fit 800 width upload.

Panasonic TZ3. I really wanted something with a 28mm equivalent fov at the wide end, and the 280mm equivalent tele end makes it really flexible. I wish it had more manual control sometimes, but I bought it for the lens and took the camera that was attached. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of options in wide angle zoom p&s cameras.

My first Love the Fuji F30

After having the F30 you have to move up to a DSLR. You can never go back to a regular P&S again. The usable ISO 800 is impressive and 1600 in a pinch.
So I have the F30 as my pocket cam. If I am going some where I need the long zoom but it is not the right conditions for my K100d.... then I take my Sony H2 and a 1.7 tele for 730mm of reach.

Those three cameras are the Trifecta... all I will ever need

Well at least until the new KXXX comes out.

The Optio A30 is my P&S camera. It's not really a backup camera. I have two DSLRs (K10D and istDs) because I work as a photographer for newspapers (sports f. e.).

Backup P&S

My current P&S is a Panasonicc DMC F7 (6mp). Love this camera and will not part with it, takes great pictures.

Prior P&S was a Konica-Minolta (4mp) prior to being bought out by Sony. I would have been happy with this one too but I lost it.

My current DSLR Pentax is a K10D, still learning.

All three of these have two things in common that are important to me:
1- Big enough to hold onto. Don't care for the pocket size P&S cameras. I need to be able to wrap my right hand around the camera.
2- Anti shake in the camera.

I've always used Pentax SLR's but the K10D is my first DSLR and first Pentax digital. Immediately prior to purchasing it I was using a Panasonic DMC-FZ50. This is a phenomenal camera. It is (can be) fully manual, has a great lens with long zoom and image stabilisation. The only problem with it is extreme noise above ISO200 but not much of a problem for what I do. When I got the K10D I gave the Pannie to my son, who had been using my K1000 for his photo class at school and an old Fuji 3100 for personal use. But I wanted a P&S, mainly for concerts, so I opted for the Canon G9. The verdict is still out on this camera as both it and the K10D are only a week old.

It would be awesome if Pentax made a teeny little SLR that would fit in a large pocket with one of the pancake lenses attached. oh and a carbon fibre body, 14MP and all the K10D's features please!

A 5year old Canon A70.
My family has taken it overseas 3 times and come back with excellent trip photos, inside cathedrals, outside in the rain, at night all without any knowledge of photography, couldn't ask for any more.
