An Ode to the Panasonic Lumix LX3

For those of you have the panasonic lumix lx3, you are truly fortunate.

So of course, I have my K20D with the lens collection to match. But time and time again, I find that the LX3 is the camera of choice for me.

If you translate its focal lengths into the APC equivalent you are taking about 16-40mm with F2.0-2.8! Okay, the sensor noise is only really acceptable at ISO 400. But seriously, where can you get that range covered with great image quality and excellent low light performance? I've thought about the DA*16-50mm F2.8. But its QC issues make me nervous. And the DA 16-45mm and DA 17-70 are good options, but they just aren't quite as fast. And none of those options are quite small and portable as the LX3.

So I end up keeping the LX3 in the bag with the K20D and some normal/telephoto primes/zooms -- depending on mood. Definitely a nice combination.

The 16-50 QC issues were mostly with the earlier runs. I haven't heard of anyone getting a bad one from the more recent runs. This is kind of typical of pentax products, come to think of it.

Sounds like that LX3 is working out nice for you though. I've seen some excellent shots from those.

Its a great camera and the IQ is very nice. but what I miss is the DOF of dslr. I find shots look more flat the smaller the sensor is. In some shots this does not matter and they look great, in others it does.

I find it amazing how crap the raw shots look in camera raw, I just get deperessed and dont even know where to start. I shoot raw+jpeg but so far I have not converted any raws. the jpeg engine is quite impressive it looks great compared to the raw at default settings.

My K20D and LX3 are happily living together in the same bag for some months now!
They seem to complete (rather than compete with) each other.
I especially like using LX3 when I want to go either unnoticed or to display a low profile (especially since I happen to have a 'large' body already).

Nice time I'll get you a poem....although I think I'm far more inclined to the visual rather than the written arts.

I am interested in one but f/2 is a bit misleading in that DOF is still very hard to control and it's a solid 2 to 3 stops poorer ISO wise.

Still, a god effort to say the least compared to the rubbish on offer.

Played with my bro-in-law's Canon G10 but I'm glad that I got the LX-3... just so much better.
