Before I buy a K-x about the "jello" effect

I have been looking and reading everywhere, I have watched tons of videos.
I notice that A lot have some kind of jello effect to them. or just a lot of blur with movment,

Is this cause of the 25fps? (its 25 right?) or just people not using the right settings?

I want a great SLR with great video, I know I might be asking for too much, but your In site on this would be great as am looking to buy as soon as tomorrow

am looking to make shorts and video projects with it, but also learn Digital photography, and how to use a SLR.

Thanks for reading!

The wobble is caused by the "rolling shutter" of the CMOS chips in video mode. Rather than reading all the lines off the sensor at once, it scans them from top to bottom consecutively. So the bottom of the sensor is read at a later moment than the top line, meaning things will have moved during that time - resulting in skew and wobble.

If you shoot properly and carefully then you won't have too many problems. If you shoot like a "soccer mum" - handeld with a 300mm lens doing whip pans - then you're gonna run into trouble!

So in the right hands this is a nice lil video cam as well? I know this Is a Pentax fourm, I can I ask how It holds up to something like that Sony NEX 5 or even the olympus p1?

what do you suggest?

1) It's 24P, not 25P

2) It has bad jello, as do many of the much pricier 1st-generation vDSLRs. I believe the NEX is better jello-wise, I don't know about the Olympus. There should be plenty of online footage for both, however.

I can't compare it to either of those cameras but I can say it's biggest downfall is the lack of manual controls.

I guess what am trying to ask is, Is there settings to help with the jello effect or any other problems? like i wont be using the highest settings, or am i just stuck with it?

As deltoidjohn mentioned, jello effect will still be present regardless if you use the T1i or the K-x because they both have CMOS sensors. As long as you don't plan to do alot of fast panning, it should perform decently.

The Canon T1i will have the same rolling shutter effects as the K-X, is more expensive, and is nowhere near as good of a still camera.

If you're considering anything from Canon, let it be the t2i (550D). It gives much better options for video and is not already a year obsolete!

If you really want to get rid of the jello effect using a digital camera, you would have to go with either a DSLR with CCD sensor or a P&S camera.

I just purchased the new Canon SX30 IS that has CCD (no jello effect) and HD video with a 35x optical zoom and it is fun to use the 24-840mm (35mm eqiv) power zoom lens with 4x digital for a 3360mm !

If you really need a DSLR for video purposes, you might want to consider the new Sony A33 or A55. It seems that people love the video and most importantly it auto focuses for you. Check out this video (scroll to 2:10) that demonstrates the quality and jello effect (hardly any).
Good luck.
