wow 1/10th the price - it looks a little cumbersome but folds down well and definitely a cheap alternative. Interesting stuff.

Three letters come in handy when looking for low cost alternatives to ancillary gear:

D I Y

Do a search on "DIY *insert name of thing you are looking for*".

I just made a very handy sun shade for the rear LCD screen for A DOLLAR.
It looks great, works great, and took me about fifteen minutes to make (not counting the time it took to let the paint dry.)

NOT to say the two items shown here don't do the job or look cool, as well they are priced right.

If one is handy with simple tools and knows their way around a hardware store, there are all kinds of great gadgets to be had.
(just an FYI on DIY is all)

Maybe the forum could use a DIY section?

I don't think a DIY LCD sun shade is the same as a DIY shoulder mount DSLR rig.

$1.00 (one dollar USD) example was meant as a comparative of what can be done DIY.
Whereas; there are plenty of $40 (and even more expensive) sunshades available, but a person could also make one for A DOLLAR (as an acceptable alternative.)
"Acceptable alternative"; fully functional, effective, producing similar results while saving money (which can be put toward even more cool gadgets/tools- be they DIY or not.

FWIW; here's a list of possible DIY shoulder mounts found by doing a simple search on-line:

Like I said, easy to make, less expensive, some are really impressive, and there's even one made of WOOD (w/functional follow focus!)

If what a person wants is the gadget above the shot, that's cool (I know what that's like.)

Bogen Manfrotto 561B Monopod

After looking at many reviews I decided I am going to get the Bogen Manfrotto 561B Monopod instead. I wanted something more portable than my Bogen 475/501 tripod/head setup for travel use.

FWIW- check out the Rocketfish monopod.
Solid support, light in weight, sturdy--- but, the QR is kinda cheesy (IMO.)
Comes with a a ball head as standard issue.
Don't know how it compares price wise to Manfroto though.

With that big glass you have, the QR might be a deal breaker on the Rocketfish.
I wouldn't trust it with anything over 300mm (8 pounds.)

Good luck.

I already have a cheap monopod like that for stills but the Manfrotto 561BHDV Monopod is a top rated monopod for video use.

As a videographer that enjoys using DSLR’s I wanted a light weight, low fuss, support solution when filming. I haven’t been completely sold on the various shoulder mount options made by the likes of Zacuto and others because whilst they do get some good reviews they are ridiculously expensive and cumbersome. They seem to over compensate for DSLR’s not being standard video cameras and forget about the unique features of DSLR’s themselves. So after a little research on the internet I bought the Manfrotto 561BHDV Monopod and I am chuffed with my decision.

Update: I just purchased the Steadicam Merlin and it looks like the ultimate compact stabilization system.
Here it is with my GH2 with Voigtländer Nokton 25mm f/0.95 lens and Manfrotto 323 Quick Change Adapter:

I do not think that Merlin is *low cost* option - 800USD. I use similar gear made by small German company. It does not look so PRO but works the same way and cost only 70EUR.
