Shutter speed

All over this forum people write about choosing aperture speeds like 1/25th and 1/50th when shooting video on a K-x.

I own a K-x and I do not see those f-stops.

What I see is 1/15, 1/20, 1/30, 1/45, 1/60 etc.

It is not really a problem. I choose either 1/45 or 1/60 for video to get as close to 180 degree shutter. I am just wondering why everyone else seems to be able to choose eg. 1/50..?

Can someone explain it for me?

/Ronald

You have confused aperture/f stops with shutter speed. 1/125, 1/60, etc., are shutter speeds, not f stops. I don't have a Kx, but with most cameras, if you are using aperture priority the camera is able to select more shutter speeds than what you can select in Manual or Shutter Priority mode.

Sorry..

I am only talking about shutter speeds that you can select in P mode, before locking ISO and dialing to movie mode.

I only see is 1/15, 1/20, 1/30, 1/45, 1/60 etc.

But I often see people talking about selecting 1/50 and 1/25.?

Thanks, TheoSixx.

I am living in Denmark (Europe). So I guess I am from 'Abroad' and therefore I should have the PAL version, if such different versions exists..

But my video is shot at 24 fps, and I can only select 1/15, 1/20, 1/30, 1/45, 1/60 etc. as mentioned above..?

Thanks for your opinion on that, TheoSixx. You may be right, but I am a novice and not the one to judge on that.

I do not believe in Santa Claus, but I do believe, that frames without motion blur gets me closer to a cinematic look that I am after. I have no experience with 'Washing' the frames. That sounds like an interesting technique.

But with all that said, my question is still unanswered:

Why does some people refer to selecting 1/50 and 1/25 in P mode, when I am only able to select 1/15, 1/20, 1/30, 1/45, 1/60 etc.?

This is strange. I can choose 1/15, 1/20, 1/25, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50, 1/60, 1/80, 1/100 depending what aperture I choose and how much light I have with Pentax 16-45. And 1/15, 1/20, 1/25, 1/30, 1/40, 1/60 with Pentax 55-300.
I have a feeling that the increments depend of the light and specific lens aperture structure. Moreover I have doubts if that translates to fps actually in any way. I think that the camera will sustain the frame rate regardless of shutter speed by compensating in other parameters when lower SP is needed(or chosen).

I don't! Because you are setting up in P mode that has nothing to do video PAL or NTSC.

We're in the VIDEO forum.

Original post was about frame rates, in VIDEO.

"P" stands for 'Priority' mode. Right? That's STILL photography.

So, therein lies the rub; ..........................
Actually, the rub is that the original question was about shutter speed in "P" mode, not frame rate. ("P" stands for "Program Mode", BTW)

Your responses have dealt with frame rates. Other than the fact that shutter speed obviously has to be faster than frame rate, I don't believe they have anything to do with each other.

this is about trying to get 180° shutter angle affect when shooting video.
not what you're talking about parallax.

I am talking about the well known and often discussed MOVIE technique, where you trick the Pentax K-x to maintain ISO and shutter speed in video mode, by fist choosing P mode and locking the shutter speed before dialing to video mode.

My question is: Some people talk about selecting 1/50 and 1/25. But I can only select 1/15, 1/20, 1/30, 1/45, 1/60 etc. no matter what lens I am using..?

Is there a difference between european models ann US/asian models regarding shutter speeds..?

I do not think so. As much I understand the video RECORDED is neither PAL or NTSC. It is JPG square pixels. All that talk about frame rates related to these two TELEVISION systems may be irrelevant. With K-5 PAL/NTSC becomes up only when viewing on TV via HDMI cable. Not when recording video that will be done in frame rate you choose - 25, 30.
So I do not know why you can not see these shutter speed steps. I can with my K-5, but depending of the light and other settings like ISO and aperture and the lens I am using.

don't know, can't say

i did see in the SPECIFICATIONS it notes this:

Shutter Electronically controlled vertical-run focal plane shutter

Shutter Speed • 30 to 1/6000 sec* • Bulb

PENTAX K-x movie recording function: Widescreen HD movie recording at 1280x720 pixels at a cinematic 24 frames per second (720p24)

Good luck in your quest.

Hmm maybe I should just leave this little question unsolved, as itis not because it is of any real problem to me.

BTW: Could someone tell me what 'washing' the frames in editing means (as TheoSixx mentions above).?

This might have to do with how you have set the increments of your dials. E.g. 1/3 per step or 1/2 per step.

Like with ISO if it is set to 1/3 you can select values like ISO 320, 640, 1000, etc. besides the normal values like 200, 400, 800, etc.

Same applies for appertures like 3.2 and 6.3. By choosing a different 'step-size' you might be able to select those 'in between' shutterspeeds as well.

I own a K5 (formerly a K20d) so I don't know where to find this in the menu on the Kx but it should be mentioned in the manual.
