some confusion about using zoom h4n

I just bought a zoom h4n and mount it directly on camera hotshoe
but the audio recorded actually is worse than in-camera mic...so much more noise..and it pick up every camera operation sounds..like zooming, focus...whereas in-camera mic do pick up but very quiet
is that suppose to has less noise and better sounds quality??
is there something I misunderstand??

You might need to mount it farther away from the camera if it's that sensitive.

We use the Zoom for all of our DSLR shoots, but never mount it on camera. Ever. It does come with that handle mic grip, and we often place it on a regular mic stand. And we make full use of the XLR inputs, adding either a shotgun or Lav mic. The stereo mics on the Zoom and good for capturing room tone and such, but the device really shines as a mobile recording more than an actual microphone.

Use one of these - Noob Store | DSLR Film Noob Shock adaptor, isolates the recorder from the camera. You can probably get them from other places too.
