Hitfilm 2 Express free... only today

I know this is a bit off topic, and a bit late, but...

https://hitfilm.com/express/free

For today Hitfilm 2 Express is still free. I haven't looked into it yet, apart from watching a review, but it seems to be an all in one alternative to Premiere Pro, After Effects, Speedgrade and software to do CGI with. And while it may not be as powerful as all those programs, it is much more affordable and perhaps also easier. Should still be really good. So if you want to give it a try, grab a serial number NOW.

Thanks! I'd considered buying this with the Sony Movie Studio upgrade bundle, but I didn't want to pay the extra money, so I just got Movie Studio. Now I'm glad I waited!

I have looked into it. It doesn't like 10 bit h264 files (well, duh, Premiere Pro doesn't either, except if it is in the right container, and I haven't found a way to do that), and it doesn't like the MJPEG files from my K-5 (which does surprise me. Haven't looked into what's wrong yet). Otherwise it makes a nice impression. Maybe it's a good introduction to effects work before stepping up to After Effects?

Pet peeve! You have to "Like" something on social media to get it and if it turns out being a piece of cr$p you cant unlike it!

Well, yes, but it seems to be good actually. Reviews, even from users of more professional software, have been good. And it looks fine to me too. MJPEG should be supported, so I'll look into it. Clearly it will be better than say Windows Movie Maker. A like is a pretty cheap price for software like this, especially since it's just one posting on your Facebook wall or your twitter feed, and you can probably delete it afterwards anyway.

ffmpeg is free and good for changing the container. For example, if the right container is .mov, a command might be like:
Code:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.mov

Thanks. Unfortunately, the container required is MXF, as used in the XAVC standard. And ffmpeg only supports MXF for MJPEG or MPEG2 or something like that.

Quick test and I find HF2E won't accept .MTS files unless you upgrade. So I'll stick with MAGIX Movie Edit Pro rather than transcode just to be able to use the footage in HF2X. No problems with HF2X and any vid from my K-7/K-01/Q or MX-1 though. Preview playback is a little laggy (even after setting the cache to an SSD) compared to MMEP which is as smooth as silk and scrubs very nicely.

Interesting. Maybe you can try dropping the MTS into a MKV container. Maybe that works... I shall try when back at home.

HF2E does not support importing of MKV at all.

To clarify, MTS video stream is supported, but not the Dolby Audio stream (AC-3)

Oh, great. Yeah, it's... rather expected that they don't want to pay for licenses when giving away the product for free. You could transcode the audio, which isn't such a big deal.

Yeh, no problem at all to transcode, but why bother when I don't need to
I'll stick with what I have.
