Well, I finally broke down and bought a DJI Ronin.

Works AMAZINGLY well.

Here's a picture you don't see very often!



Hard to believe how much I spent for a gimbal, but the results are worth it.

Any one else with a Ronin?

Love DJI products! Saving up for that one. Big believer in gimbals. Using a Polariod Handheld stabilizer at the moment.

I *just* got it...as I've had enough of using a Glidecam.
I will definitely post some vids.

The K3 works great so far, and with the electronic level, I can see just how awesome the Ronin is when it comes to stabilizing.

Again, why the purchase?

More and more folks want dynamic shots, so I've got to deliver them.

I will keep the Glidcam too, since it's more "weather tolerant".

Ok, here is a short clip that pushed me over the edge when it came to the Glidecam.

Basically, the second you even change the focus on the Glidecam, it goes totally out of balance. I was using the DA*16-50 here, and I changed the zoom by accident, and it went a little haywire - until I stopped, and fiddled with the adjustments to get it back.

Even so, I still had to stabilize the video and crop to get the most real estate.
Ultimately, the clip above was part of the footage I got.

Sure with the Ronin, you still have to balance it, but the balance is more intuitive to set, and the motors correct if you are *just* a bit off. Mind you, the Ronin will NOT allow a camera to be slapped on, you HAVE to get a great balance before you turn the Ronin on.

I will still keep the Glidecam, but I am convinced I will only use SMC-A lenses with it as they are pretty much "Cinema" glass with Pentax.

We'll see how the Ronin works, as I will be shooting some internal scenes later today.

Indeed, I read that it would be best to stick to primes on a glide-fly cam.
I've seen great footage with a ronin. Can't afford that though :-( But i understand you use it professionally.

Looking at either a xcam sabre for its compactness (travel) or maybe a monocam because it's also a monopod at cost of size. Life is hard...

Yep, today is going to be a shoot with the Ronin.
Hotel location, probably with the SMC-A 24mm f/2.8 or the DA14mm f/2.8
I still don't have the Ronin down to perfection, but we'll see how it goes!

I hate the first real outing with new gear so close to obtaining it.

It's how it goes though.
Why get gear if you're not going to get into the real world and use it!?

Well the shoot today went a little awry...

We had the location at the swanky hotel, but there were some V.I.P.s who were checking in, so we had to scrub that location (since we were going to be in the lobby and doing some other shots), so the Ronin was not used very much today.

The second location was inside, but by the time we got to that location, the light was gone and it was a wrap for the day.

(some things just don't align, alas, goes with the territory)

With a little time with the Ronin today, it was awesome...but oh boy...it's HEAVY and I have not the muscles built up yet as I've only had it a few days.

Can I recommend the SMC-A 24mm f2.8 ?
The HyperFocal distance is silly-short like about 3 meters, and even shorter with a 0.5 screw on wide-angle unit, so for that outdoors shot, stopped down appropriately, you can pretty much leave the lens set just inside infinity for most things, and only need to pull focus for CU's and MS's within the 1 to 2 meter range.

I have some mates with the Ronin's et al,.. some fairly beefy guys,... even they find those rigs get heavy very quickly - there is a body brace available with a bar that goes from your back up over your head to have a pair of Ocky Straps to hang the Ronin from an take the weight.

And I votes with Brooke and Grispie - new gear can be a P.I.T.A. till you adapt to it.

The Ronin's cuts didn't make it into the finished product.
This was a demo reel of software we are making.
