Sd card suggestions?

I want to shot 16x9 video at the "best" setting with my K7 but my sdhc card will only give me about 48 seconds before it automatically stops recording because my SD card is too slow (PNY Class 6 8GB). If I go down in quality, I have no problems recording much longer. I know the best is probably the Sandisk Extreme 3, but if I don't need to buy that fast of a card, I'd like to go for something less expensive! That's why I'm asking you guys. If I need the Sandisk, than that's what I'll buy. Tell me your experiences, I'd probably go with a 16GB or 32GB card???

So you paid over $1,000 for a K-7 body and don't want to spend a few bucks more for a quality SDHC card that will not give you problems. That is like buying a BMW and looking to buy a cheap set of tires for it at PepBoys.

I had a similar mis-understanding of the Class of operation and subsequently purchased a Class 6 Trancend Card.
I had made the presumption that it's (Class 6) speed was similar to the Sandisk Ultra II that has a read write of up to 15mb/s. A class 6 card actually is only good to 6mb/sec and anything faster is a bonus (read again you get what you pay for!).

The K-7 requires at minimum 10mb/sec read write for full HD video. In speaking to Pentax two days ago the only ones that they have tested and approved so far are Panasonic (believe it or not!) Sandisk and Toshiba for the K-7 video. I asked if they have run Lexar through the paces yet and he said not at this time though he stated that Lexar is all he used personnaly.

Regardless the author of this thread as well as I and all others need to get a better grip on "Class of service" with respect to the media.

I have since decided to go to a class 10 Sandsk at 30mb/sec read write speed.

It is early for me but I have to comment that I am thrilled so far with the K-7

Thanks for the info, I guess it'll be a Class 10 for me.

Class 6 is not Class 6 throughout.
One no-name's Class 6 may be 6Mb/sec but SanDisk's Class 6 is 15Mb/sec.
And you'll benefit from SanDisk's quality and reliability.

Further uinderstand that a Class 10 is rated at 10mb/sec.
Sandisk class 10 SDHC is rated to 30mb/sec.
Other companies may only go to 10MB ( a class 10). So again, watch what you are getting for your money. Speed is the key here in addition to the capacity of the media.

The 30mb/sec Sandisk Extreme III SDHC cards were stamped Class 6 when they came out because there was no Class 10 rating system in place and Class 6 was the top SDHC rating.

BTW the SD Association still only shows Class 6 as the highest rating.

Update!

I just tried an old SD card of mine, a Sandisk 2GB Class 2 card that let me record 16x9 at the highest quality until the card filled up! Out preforming a PNY 8GB Class 6 card, that would let me record about 50 seconds at the most!!!

if that card meets the class 6 spec, which it probably does, there is nothing wrong with it... and pentax states in their literature that a class 6 card is all that is required.

the problem here is that pentax lied about the recording speed that the camera needs to write its bloated mjpeg video codec to the card... we have covered this issue in spades before:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-video-forum/73955-k7-video-memory-...p-problem.html

as that thread proves, the k7 actually requires *more* than a class 6 card.

Get this card

This is the sandisk extreme iii 8GB card and it's $30.00 I have two of them and have tested, they record the full 9 minutes that the k7 allows.

Do Class 4 SDHC Cards work for K-x video?

Is anyone using Class 2 or Class 4 SDHC cards in their K-x for video? Just wondering...I don't want to buy Class 6 unless I have to.
How can anyone be so cheap to not even want to get a Class 6 card to shoot HD video with the KX. I have been using Sandisk Extreme III cards since 2004 without a single problem.

A few months ago I did a comparison test of 3 SDHC cards (PNY Optima Class 4, SanDisk Ultra II Class 4, and SanDisk Class 2) with the K-7 at various settings: Think you need the fastest SDHC card for HD video? Think again!: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Lesson: You can get decent performance with GOOD Class 4 cards. Hell, you can even get away with GOOD Class 2 cards if you're feeling gutsy. If you go with cheaper but less-known Class 4 cards though, you run the risk of drastically poorer performance. Unfortunately, I don't own any Class 6 cards, so I can't compare its performance to my Class 4 cards. Perhaps I will buy one soon if the price is right.

My Class 2 Sandisk out-performs My RiData Class 6 while recording video on my Pentax W60.

Just find a standard Sandisk on sale somewhere and see what happens.....

K-x?

What about the K-x? Any differences in requirements/recommendations with regards to video recording and card speed?
