new 14MP sensor for 1080p @60fps !

QuoteQuote:
OmniVision's 14.6-megapixel image sensor is capable of delivering high-resolution still photography and full 1080p high-definition (HD) video at 60 frames per second (fps). The new OV14810 for digital still/video cameras (DSC/DVC) and OV14825 for mobile applications are among the very first sensors to achieve the highest quality in both video and photography for mainstream consumer electronics.

OmniVision’s new 14.6-megapixel HD sensor uses its most advanced 1.4-micron OmniBSITM pixel architecture to achieve optimal performance and sensitivity in the industry’s smallest format. The 1/2.33-inch OV14810 has an active array of 4,416 x 3,312 backside illumination pixels operating at 15 fps in full resolution, or delivering full 1080p HD video at 60 fps, using a binning feature to achieve higher sensitivity. In full HD video mode, the sensor also provides additional pixels for electronic image stabilization (EIS).

If Pentax put that in the X70 with 24x zoom that would be a cool low cost 1080p video camera.

That is a LOT of megapixels to cram onto such a tiny sensor. It sounds like it'll be doing 60fps by binning so I'm not sure the quality will be that much better than other sensors out there currently.
I'm still waiting for a 4/3" to APS-C sensor to come out that can do 24+fps at full res (at least in 16:9 cropped mode) at an affordable price. Still no sign of one yet at that size, only at 1/1.8" and smaller. Kodak is building some impressively fast, relatively large CCD sensors but is targeting them more for industrial use

It has the same size sensor that is in the Pentax X70 . This is not a sensor for a DSLR but I think this sensor would work great in a compact super zoom like the X70.

Interesting too is 14.6MP@15fps which is close to full resolution video read-out.

Or the OV14825 sibling sensor with the same characteristics but made for smart phones (28° ray inclination).

I guess the decease of small sensor P&S cameras is imminent.

For the system camera species though, I guess that chips with A/D converters per row or cell even are a more interesting evolution. Add an on-chip "frame memory" and we should see much better and faster video read-out, like 1080p with full read-out and on-chip downsampling.

Fujifilm FinePix HS10 with 30x optical zoom

I hope Pentax uses OmniVision’s new 14.6-megapixel HD sensor for 1080p 60 when they upgrade the X70.

The Fujifilm FinePix HS10 also features a full HD movie mode (1080p) with stereo sound, and the camera’s mini HDMI portallows users to easily display ultra clear high definition photographs and movies on high definition televisions. A new Super High Speed Movie function can freeze action and capture breathtaking movies at up to 1000 frames per second for amazing slow-motion movies that reveal the hidden world of events that normally occur in the blink of an eye.

EP1 with Pentax 25mm f1.4 CCTV lens

Now since Pentax is a leader in CCTV lenses with some zooms up to 55x range it would be interesting if Pentax came out with a small EVIL camera like the new Optio i 10 with the Omnivision sensor ( 1080p 60 ) and maybe a 32x zoom and fast f1.4 primes.
