noise reduction quality in video mode

Hey folks, I have the K-x and was just wondering how good the noise reduction can perform during video anyway?
Having 24fps at HD, is the camera even capable of adding the same noise reduction quality as in stills mode?
I love the K-x video for outdoor/daylight performance but it is considerably worse than Nikon D90 and not even close to Canon 7D for indoor/low-light performance. I tested with several lenses at f2.8 indoors, it still appears very noisy

sadly, it does produce videos that are quite noisy.

i wonder what's the explanation for this? considering that the k-x is one of the top high ISO performers amongst APS-C cameras for still photos.

I have not noticed the difference in video mode with noise reduction on unfortunately. It is strange how much better the still images seem to perform in low light. At least the K-X stays sharp in the dark. I get the feeling that it has a lot (if not everything) to do with the processing as apposed to the sensor. I think it's video is even noisier in low light than the GF1 which is smaller 4/3 sensor. Perhaps it's just a matter of giving up low noise in favor of latitude and sharpness.

I have found out that you can reduce noise very well in post prosessing without getting smudgy looking video. Avidemux (Avidemux - Main Page) works very well when using its MPlayer hqdn3d noise reduction filter with settings 0 for spatial luma strength, 5-15 for spatial chroma strength and 3-6 for temporal strength. The settings depend on how noisy the video is. I prefer not to use luma noise reduction at all, because it creates easily smudgy video. This way I mainly remove colour noise.

Edit: Here are two images, first one is without noise reduction and the second one is with 0 luma, 30 chroma and 6 temporal noise reduction. They are 100% crops of the same video frames. It was pretty dark outside when this was filmed.

I was just doing my video tutorial on noise reduction using Avidemux when I saw your post. So I changed my noise filter to the one you used. A little more work since I had to redo my samples. However you were right the video don't look smudgy as some of my samples did. At the end of this tutorial I'll show some samples including the settings I used.

You lose some of the nice shadow effects that are caused by the flames with the noise reduction. That's unfortunate.

That looks really good, thanks for the info, I'll definately give it a try.
