You don't have to choose "auto". If you move the aperture dial yourself, you're giving yourself complete aperture freedom independent from the camera.

edit: and by aperture dial, I mean the aperture ring on the lens, not the command dial on the camera
I have not wanted to change the F stop during a recording when it was set to fixed setting.

ok, but the point is you COULD if you wanted to. Technically you could with any lens that has an aperture ring, but the video-edition lens being referred to has a smooth aperture range with no hard stops, so the aperture can be adjusted smoothly, without noticeable "clicks" from one stop to the next.

you mean a rolling aperture dial or wheel. not the casual aperture ring with f-stop gaps.

IMO, I don't think it is really an advantage but a nice feature to have for smooth aperture transition and effect. if my imagination is correct, such a lens could display a smooth transition from brigth to dark image (vice versa) and shallow to deep DOF effect. I was looking at the video samples and I was expecting that they would show what I was hoping to see. too bad they didn't. maybe someone saw something that I was refering to and provide me link to see.
