Is 720p 60 fps in the near future for Pentax?

I am excited by the recent offerings of Pentax in the K-7 and K-x models. I have access to several older Pentax lenses that I would love to use on a dSLR.

However, about 50% of the use of a dSLR for me would be video. This would be mostly sports/action in a bright, outdoor setting. 60 fps is very attractive for this purpose, especially for overcranking, slow-mo effects.

Does anyone know if future models (or future firmware releases) will offer a 720p 60fps mode? This would essentially seal the deal for me. Thanks.

I shoot 1080p60 with my Panasonic HDC-TM700 3MOS camcorder and slo-motion looks fantastic with it. It makes the videos from my K-7 look like standard definition.

Thanks for the input. I really like the T2i, but going with Pentax would be a big advantage since I have access to an assortment of lenses. If Pentax does not produce a 720p60 product soon, however, I might just go with the T2i.

The HDC-TM700 is an impressive product from what I hear. Ideally, I would prefer to have one camera to use for shots and video. I spend much of my time at the beach doing surf shots, so I would prefer not to drag multiple devices to the location.

Any rumors of 60fps in the future for Pentax?

The Panasonic HDC-TM700 does 14.2mp 4608x3072 in still mode and 13.3mp 4864x2736 stills in 16:9 video mode.

Still shot from the TM700:

The Bottom Line

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the image quality produced by the Panasonic TM700 in 1080P/60 mode rivals that from considerably larger and more expensive cameras. Manual controls are somewhat limited, but given the small size and weight there will be many videographers who rejoice in the freedom that such a small high-quality camcorder can produce.

Video capable DSLRs are all the rage, along with narrow depth of field film making. But if you're in the market for a proper camcorder – one with adequate controls and great image quality – all for under $1,000 – then the Panasonic TM700 is what you're looking for. And if you need shallow DOF, there's always the use of a Letus or similar device.

If they could bring 60p to the k-x, i would literally jump with joy. I would imagine it's capable, but who am I to say so, i'm no hardware expert. I would be willing to bet the K-7 is capable of it, especially if it was just 720p60.

@jogiba
The TM-700 is a nice camcorder, definitely better than most other consumer cams right now. Almost pro-sumer with it's features.

For most family videos of the kids the last thing you want is a shallow DOF with manual focus and no power zoom unless you use an 8-16mm lens.

Jogiba...

What bracket are you using for the Rode microphone on the HDC-TM700?

I confused about why this discussion is carrying on in the K-x video forum, since the K-x is, y'know, the exact opposite of what's easy for kid videos.
