I know absolutely nothing about shooting video with a DSLR, but I was thinking.... why couldn't a weight be added to the leg of a monopod and create sort of a "handi-cam" affair? Seems like it would work fairly well in steadying the camera when moving about. Just a thought that may be old hat.

Have you tried googling "DIY monopod steadicam"?

The issue is getting the balance right, but you're not the first with the idea. Another one is to take apart a cheap tripod. That should work even better, because it has a flexible element in it. Google is your friend, again. There are also other things, like mounting the camera on basically a steering wheel. But the problem with all these things is you can't touch the camera anymore. Want to make an adjustment? Change the focus? Good luck.

In body shake reduction is wonderful because you can a) get (relatively) stable video and b) still touch the camera.
