I'd stock with the D800/e. otherwise you'll just wish that you'd shot with the D800. Apart from the incredible DR sharpness detail and the general awesomeness of the D800, it was this aspect of the camera that clinched the deal for me. While the 645D still, for me has the edge but its certainly close enough. If the normal D800 is easier to get then I would think you'd be happy with that.

Oh and don't worry about the CC. I can take it!

So are you suggesting get a second D800E in my case?

I would get a second D800 or an E. there are apparently availability issues with the E but if its available go ahead and get it. In your shoes I'd be frightened of regret. Grabbing a fantastic shot but wishing I'd got it on the more capable camera. The shop I bought my D800 in had the normal but not the E and if I didn't get it when I did I would have been away when the E arrived. Research suggests that after PP there is little difference between the two. I love my D800 so much that I didn't bring my 645D with me.

I know what it's like to need a second camera. Laat year, I was up in the Lake District and my 645D developed a sensor fault. I only had that camera with me so travelled by train back home - 300 miles to get my 5D2. Headed back up but regretted the whole time that I couldn't shoot with my 645D. I still got some good shots but they felt a little shallow

Yes, I thought I would regret not having the Zoom mounted on the one 90% of the time and any of the other lenses on the 2nd.. for walking around I'd have the same output to deal with.. .no changes in workflow etc. There's aD800E in a local shop that they told was available yesterday but this morning it was gone.. the 'E" is due in again next week so I'll just have to wait now as there's none around that I can find locally.

just picked up a knock off battery grip with 2 EN-EL18's for my D800.. very sweet.. sure the grip feels cheap.. but it was! Not like the K-5's Grip.. which was substancial.. apparently the Nikon Grip doesn't feel all that solid either.. but for $400ish I'm not caring to compare... not when I picked up all mine for $135.. and prices are dropping weekly it seems.

The Nikon grip is a solid fat lump of funkifide filth (something strong and positive).. dunno where you got the idea it wasn't. The main deal for me with these grips is the lack of buttons... NO ISO, NO EV..NO Fn NO DOF.. remap this and that etc... freaking ripoff for sure but...

What brand did you buy?

I've run into a road block trying to decide on a Nikon telephoto. I really wanted a 400/4 or 400/4.5 ( I should have looked more closely) and apart from that it appears that Canon Tele's are better but the cameras no so much.

Nikon 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S VR Nikkor Lens Image Quality

The 200-400 looks great but not exactly a cheap alternative and the weight would make it not all that useful for walking around.

It's a shame they don't do a 'G' version of the 300/4 with VR.

Today we went further North, (our hotel is within 35 miles of the North Korean border) and took a cable car part way up seoraksan mountain. At about 1600mm there were a few fingers of rock around. The climbing isn't the hardest, even so there are people speaking words of encouragement from a megaphone on the summit to get people to climb to the top. Before I did, I found an interesting angle between some rocks:
Wow... thats one cool shot!

I don't know much about nikon, but the D4 is what I would go for. Once you use a pro body they make everything else feel cheap. Unless you are printing everything 6' x 5' of course.

We headed back to Seoul today, a 4.5 hour drive. We went out for dinner and then went out to a jazz bar where a Dutch trio were playing fairly hard-core jazz. It was interesting just to watch them interacting with each other. I decided to bring the D800 with me with my 24 - 70 and AFS 50 1.8G and my AFD 85 1.8. In the end as it was quite an intimate club in the Hongae area of the city, so I used exclusively the 50 f/1.8G. My front view was partially blocked and I didn't want to be a nuisance to the others. All except the first were shot in full manual exposure. All were converted using Silver efex pro 2

Nikon D800 AF-S 50 1.8G f/3.5 1/160 ISO 800

f/3.5 1/100 ISO 800

f/5 1/100 ISO 800

f/5.6 1/80 ISO 800

f/2.8 1/125 ISO 400

I think tht the D800/e would suit Steve more as I suspect that he is more interested in detail than anything else. Besides, the D4 is a significant jump up in price which won't be a worthwhile investment unless he is after speed and low light.

Thanks Steve -

A couple more this time of some of the audience. The treatments in Silver efex pro2 are slightly different the first one I used a Ilford Pan 50 profile and this has more contrast as a result.

D800 in June

I picked up a D800 and love it only complaint is the location of the Iso button and battery life, besides that it’s a wonderful tool

400mm F5 1/500 iso 320

650mm 1/1250 F9 iso 1000

290mm 1/5sec F4 iso 2000

400mm 1/250 F6.3 iso280

400mm 1/125 F6.3 iso720

400mm 1/400 F4.5 iso 500

I love pentax in the past but its getting hard and harder to keep the love going
